    Doughty

Can’t believe he’s only just turned 24. Lad has so much going for him.

Made a great defensive header first half. Real threat going forward.

Defo between him and Barkley for player of the season so far.

Like so many of the team from last year has stepped up brilliantly. He gives nothing less than 100% effort too which is a consistent feature of our play under Robe Edwards. Happy times !

the best bit about Alfie's game is that he reads the game so well

        He's been great.

However, for me, and maybe this is the festive booze still in effect, but I think Barkley may be the finest Luton player I've ever seen wear the shirt.

I'm too young to have witnessed (or remember) the likes of Hill, Harford etc in the flesh.

But Barkley is running the games against some world class midfielders and some of the best teams in the world. He's a rolls royce of a player.

How his career seemed to be dwindling out is beyond me. His attitude and effort seems spot on.

I don't think there's any doubt Barkley is the best player we've ever had playing for us. On England caps alone he's the best, the only one who comes close for me is Donaghy, we'll never know how many caps he would have got had he been English, or German, Italian, etc for that matter.

                You can’t compare.

The old First Divisions were never of the same quality.

The closest player in the 80’s to compare Barkley to is Paul Gascoigne.

Hill was an outstanding player but the game was slower and the league mostly English players at a time when we were a very average International team.

Preece was a close second in term of quality to Hill and personally I rated above any other player we had at the time.

Good summary, the game was much less tactically astute then as well. You can only really judge Hill by the standards of the time and how well he did, and he was a sublime player.

But modern players are much more aware so what Barkley does, in this league, is a class above in terms of speed of thought, tactical nous and technical ability.

Could Hill have achieved the same level had he been born all these years later? Maybe, I'd tentatively like to think so, I guess we'll never know.

He did, of course, pretty much dedicate his career to us though so his impact will have been that much greater in that sense.

Posted by Cigar Chap on 27/12/2023, 11:32:50, in reply to "Re: Doughty"

When we signed Albert I actually said he could end up being our best ever player.

In hindsight that was a bit premature but if we have three players playing at that standard then we are talking about them being the best ever Luton players - clearly we are doing something very right, it’s utterly brilliant and I hope inspiring to the kids watching this like we did in the 80’s.

Is Lokonga a better player than Hill, impossible to ever conclude that, if Albert starts scoring then who knows!

I was only young, I'd say he was a slightly different player but yeah, ran games. The difference of course is now a days, we can re watch a game countless times at the touch of a button. Not then.
My old man used to say as good as that mid/late 80s team was non of us really appreciated at the time, just how good they were. Presumed those days would last forever.
Where as since getting out of the conference, most of us appreciate every minute of where we're at.

                        Decent points

They're so many stats and camera views these days which just weren't available back then to truly understand a player.

Some of the pitches back then were truly atrocious and some of the tackles which were allowed against players, I guess as Cigar Chap says above, it's almost impossible to compare.

I appreciate they're different types of players but even so it would be criminal if the likes of Henderson and Phillips go instead of him.

I doubt he'll be a Luton player by the end of the tournament either way but what an all round achievement it would be to get him in that squad.

However, being outside the big clubs I would be surprised no matter how well he continues playing.

of course i haven't watched all the goalie's

im coming from the point of mainly watching Kam and he has been nothing short of world class. The 10's and 10's of save's he has made have been nothing short of outstanding and I bet you a big club will come in for him with MASSIVE money

                                  wait and see

I’d go for him. Keepers often make saves that you would expect them to make, Kaminsky makes exceptional ones that win us points. Best keeper we’ve had for a long time
