    Experienced travel person advice

Posted by Cumbrian bloke on 24/12/2023, 14:10:22

I am planning a UK to Spain train trip possibly using a multi country or city ticket.

Main reason being I prefer to see the landscape and places that a plane bypasses also I hate flying.

So looking at prices of such tickets looks very expensive.

    Anyone got any ticket advice

Avoid France, maybe a ferry to Bilbao from Portsmouth, I think the Spanish train system is very good, Portugal is very nice as well. A short hop to Morocco from Tarifa in Southern Spain

        Ok Since its Christmas...

Depends which part of Spain. And your preferred mode of non plan travel.

If its train there are direct links between Paris and Barcelona. If you need the car or an alternative there are ferries from Portsmouth or Plymouth to Bilbao and Satander. A hybrid option maybe to catch a ferry to Le Havre in Spain which has direct train links to Paris and get a connecting train from there

Le Havre in Spain - has it moved since Ricky Hill played for them?

Unwanted tone? It was simply giving travel advice. NOt sure what underlying tone you picked up. There was none. Just being helpful.

3 Paragraphs is hardly war and peace. I was giving friendly travel advice in the spirit of christmas. You seem determined to turn it into an argument. So have a good christmas.

No I wasn`t. And no you weren`t. If you wanted a train timetable there are plenty of apps available. You were simply trying to say "oh look at me i may go here". I was being nice and offering advice. as it was christmas. Which has now passed. And you didn claim you were being impostered and had enough time to do so. therefor it was you. attention seeking bellend.

                      See how this works?

Pull on some big boy pants and fly... 👍

Isn't there a Plymouth(?) - Santander ferry? Could be worth looking at.

French TGV and Spanish AVE trains are expensive (though very nice).

If you want to keep things cheap, take buses and coaches. Check Flixbus and Alsa (Spain).

"BlaBlaCar" ridesharing is pretty huge in Spain - basically long-distance Uber.

There's a "low-cost" high speed company in France and Spain called "OuiGo" which I believe allows you to do the Marseille - Barcelona leg for relatively cheap.

Booking in advance generally gets you better rates.

"Multi" tickets are generally more expensive than they're worth.

Better to avoid Paris and Marseille if you're on a budget - the accommodation will be shit.

Kinda rushed getting ready for Polish Xmas, let me know if you want any more specifics.

Also, sites like omio will search trains and buses together (though sometimes companies like Flixbus are excluded from search I think).

You can save £2 on booking fees if you book direct. IF you're on THAT much of a budget.
