    Utility bills

Posted by Godders on 14/12/2023, 17:39:17

Earlier this summer I was bemoaning my supplier for trying to charge me £720 per month for gas and electric!
After various negotiations, changing tariffs, and a couple of high payments I've now got my DD down to £300 per month which was what I was paying before the summer. So much for their automatic direct debit calculator supposedly making a calculation based on our predicted usage!!!!

Even £300 a month seems high to me, I pay as I use, monthly electric and quarterly gas, which normally is a bit more expensive than direct debit.I don't pay anywhere near that. Do you expect to be in credit at the end of the year, if so why give them money, keep it yourself.

Me too Sparky. Just received my monthly electricity bill, marginally over £27

Don't trust direct debit. I have a relative who pays by DD and he is over a thousand pounds in credit, yet they continue to take the same amount from him each month. I told him to insist they pay him at least £700 back. He's too lazy to do so, must have too much money.

I pay quarterly in arrears for what has been used, sending the readings on line and getting a bill by email (dual fuel.)

What annoys me is that the company keeps telling me to have a so-called smart meter installed "to be more in control".

I can't see that it would give any more control, after all, I'm not going to be turning off the oven half-way through the cooking time.

I have both gas and electric smart meters, I know there have been issues with some people getting incorrect bills and having difficulty rectifying this.
Mine has been fine, the little digital monitor they give you does allow you to keep an eye on your spend, which is useful, and not having to be concerned about reading a meter is beneficial, but apart from that, there is no advantage to having a smart meter.

Smart meters are a huge con NaG. I keep getting pressurised to have one too, I tell them no way.

I receive a monthly email from them asking me to sent the meter readings each month for electricity and gas. No problem, I'm not so senile that I can't do that.

Then they send me the bills and I pay them. As for this nonsense about SM saving money, the only way to do that is to cut back on your usage. They treat us like idiots.

Have you never considered that if you see your spend via the monitor you may turn the thermostat down a degree or two? That's how you may make a saving.

You may have enough money not to worry about the cost, but most people these days need to keep an eye on spend.

So you agree with me then in that the only way to reduce your bills is not through having a smart meter, it's by using less electricity or/and gas.

I worry all the time about the cost. What I refuse to do is walk around my house wearing thick jumpers and a coat.

What I don't do is smoke, drink or overspend on non essentials like Christmas. It's called being responsible and making priorities.

And before I pay my utility bills I double check them against the readings I have given to make sure they've billed me correctly.

Yes but they can go hand in hand, the monitor may help you decide to reduce usage when you see your spend.

I realise that, but most people don't use more electricity and gas than they need to, especially at the prices now being charged.

You are completely missing the point, deliberately, to be controversial, awkward, argumentative, whatever.

Having a monitor can help you choose to further reduce costs should you wish. It's not difficult.

Why would I do that (be argumentative, or whatever)?
My point is that if you haven't got a lot of money, you use as little electricity as is compatible with the need to see to read, cook, wash clothes etc. anyway.

I love my holidays. And I have them, sometimes twice a year.

But you're not entitled to a holiday if you can't afford one. Some take a holiday anyway, get into debt by sticking the cost on a credit card and then, again, moan about not being able to afford their utility bills. Same with Christmas spending.

I've no sympathy with them at all.

No. If the smart meter works - then the readings are the same.

Just set it to monthly automatic and take a manual reading the same day if you want peace of mind

If standing charges were stopped, the unit price would rise, probably by at least the same amount per day to cover repairs, research and development, which is what it is for.
The real rip-off is profits, which wouldn't be a problem if the utilities hadn't been flogged off.

Yes but then you would be much closer to paying for what you use. It's why they make the standing charges so high so that you can't save as much money by using less.

                                          But absolutely yes . . . profits and dividends . . .

                                      That’s ludicrously high.

                                        £300 a month is a joke.

You live in a mansion G?

Vicarages are notoriously inefficient to heat. We also have a large family to cook, clean, and wash. Our heating is on but fairly low and we put on extra jumpers.

On the plus side, Godders, if you live in a Vicarage, it must be quite a favourable rental/lease agreement, no?

Not enough for our needs but has plenty of space but odd shapes. The downstairs is like a proper tardis whereas the upstairs is like an inverted tardis!

How many people in your household? How many bedrooms and how much do you pay?

That does sound like a lot , we pay £240 never scrimp on any heating electric etc.
