    Gazza.

Has anyone on here seen him play in the flesh?
Such a shame how his career went.
    He looked the total footballer.

Saw him play against us in a midweek. Spurs won 3-1 and Gazza scored at the KR end

Yeah I was at that game. Think Lineker and Paul Stewart also scored for them. Saw him on person a few months ago in Poole when he was doing some PR thing at a boys local football club. Looked terrible! 😬

Saw him make his debut for England as a sub v Denmark in 88. Mick started that evening.

          Brilliant player.

Lucky enough to see him for both spurs and England. Just magnificent, had that little 5 yard burst of pace that took him away from defenders.
The last working men's football hero for me.

Scored a briliiant goal against us into the Kenilworth Road end I think. I vaguely recall the old two step shuffle, straight between Donaghy and Foster like they were statues.
Then i think he rounded Sealey and poked home into the empty net.

              I might be wrong though.

I thought he was very, very good. Only English player who made me excited wearing an England shirt.

I was at all the England Euro 1996 games. He was majestic. That goal against Scotland was right in front of where I was sitting and it was a fantastic moment.
On the other hand, when Luton played at a Gazza-inspired Spurs he was a provocative (but brilliant) twat who should have been booked at least 3 times in that game. I think that was the game they went down to 9 men with Van Den Hauwe and Nayim sent off, so they'd have struggle to beat us with 8 if Gazza had gone. Saint Gary Lineker's whingeing to the ref got Ceri Hughes sent off to balance it out a bit. Not bitter.

But Gazza was a brilliant player who made England a much better team than they were without him.

I was at that game at White Hart Lane when there were 3 men sent off and I agree - Gascogne should have gone too. I stood at the front of the Shelf that day and was right in front of where he put David Preece about 4 feet into the air and about 2 yards over the touch lines. Absolutely shocking foul, Gascogne ran and tried to make himself anonymous leaving his teammates to fight his corner, it should have been a straight red though from memory he wasn’t even booked (he may have already been on a yellow). Van den Hauwe done a hatchet job on Iain Dowie for which he was sent off - there was a picture in the paper the following day of Dowie seemingly floating horizontal about a metre above the turf with VdH stood behind with his right foot forward having clearly nailed him.

I lost what little respect I had for Spurs fans that day after the foul on Preece.

England v Saudi Arabia 1998, came on as a sub for Beckham if I remember correctly.

I remember he played for Newcastle at Kenilworth Road as a youngster but cannot remember the year. I only remember he was absolutely brilliant. Can anyone provide more details of that game?

1986 if I remember correctly. My old man took me to this game. Gazza is one of the best footballers I have ever seen, even to this day.

I believe there was only one man who could have got the best out of him, but it wasn't Venables. If Gazza had signed for United and Ferguson, I've no doubt he would have been the best player to have ever come out of this country.

Newcastle thought we hadn't paid them enough respect with a bit of showboating when we won 4-0 so they did a lot of that when we lost the next game up there by the same score - Wharton sitting on the ball etc, ended on a sour note.

Didn't really go down well with anyone
