Getting the balance right in January

    Posted by Bt20 on 6/12/2023, 10:50:57

    What do we do?
Staying in the premier obviously brings it's rewards financially. Which can help the club, stadium and training facilities grow quickly season after season.
Go down and we can't be sure when the next opportunity to play in the top flight will next come along. Given some of those who have excelled this season will surely depart.
Should we take a gamble and spend a few quid in January to try to make sure we stay up or do we take the cash and hope we have enough with what we have?
I am hoping sir Mick will find a couple more gems.

Depends how much 'a few quid' is

At the right price, wage, and contract length it could be worth it.

I'm sure all involved with the running of the club will be looking at how different scenarios could play out as we approach the January window, and balancing the risk/reward associated with players they have already identified and those who may be released/loaned out to bring others in.

Long term stability with no financial cock-ups.

It's got to be worth a measured gamble of sorts for me.you know. Had we been 15 points behind at Xmas don't bother. But we won't be. for the sake of another 100 odd million you got to have a go surely ? Within reason of course.

I suspect we will spend a bit in January but not a huge amount at all. I'd rather we spent it on someone who can influence our season positively but that would be prepared to stay if we went down so that we are stronger for spending that money going forwards.

I think our recruitment has been savvy so far. Mixture of top Championship players and a bit of PL nous.

I think we could do with an experienced CB (wonder if Spurs would loan out Dier for 6 months?) and perhaps an extra option up front (Mubama from West Ham?)

If there's a chance to pick up another couple of top-end championship players, that would be good.

Doubt we'll spend big. An older defender with PL experience would be handy. Just to calm things a bit when needed.

Agreed. We do look a bit panicked when we're trying to hold on to the lead/a draw. And without Marv it's even harder.

Think we'd have left KR with 1 or 3 points yesterday if Marv had been playing.

Asked a Villa fan if they had any more Nakambas for us. He said Calum Chambers is becoming excess to requirements for them.

Just typing my user name was difficult as the score last night of 3-2 only lasted a minute or two. I thought at the start of the season we got the recruitment and spend balance spot on and that we would not spend much in January. I've changed my mind. So many of our squad have competed so well against top class opposison that their resale value will have now shot up, so the whole squad is worth more - so that could maybe free up a bit more spend than anticipated.
