What is the worst thing about VAR?

Posted by AI Bot on 29/11/2023, 21:47:40

For me it's not celebrating after a goal now because I keep thinking it's going to get ruled out. No spontaneous burst of satisfaction, just an unpleasant wait to see if it will stand. Bin it I say. There's no such thing as a perfect system. People need to come to terms with that. In every sphere of life.

What's the worst thing about VAR ? That's easy to answer, it's VAR.

There's that, but I'm pissed off that, in a typically English football way, we've managed to introduce it in such a way as it still manages to favour the bigger teams

They're not even trying to create a perfect system. If they were, the VAR would notice the attacking players that usually encroach into the box whenever a penalty kick is taken.

With that it mind, VAR seems to be more about creating more goals than it is do with creating fairness or even talking points.

And I would say that is all for the money men rather than the fans.

Football sold its soul. Even KR sold out - at a time that could hardly be described as financial hardship. Sad times.

I may turn my back on it all after this season. Maybe even go back to non-league with a smaller, local club. For me, this century, those were our best days in terms of real football.

            Creating more goals?

I'd be interested to see the stats on that, I had the opposite impression because of the number disallowed for offside that might otherwise have stood.

Does often feel that it's an exercise in 'what can we disallow that for?'.

For me it's checking every tiny detail to see if an infringement has occurred.

For me, I don't mind the principle of VAR but it should be only if the ref has missed a clear and obvious mistake, not waiting to determine if someone's toenail of offside.

For me, there should be a time limit somehow introduced too. If it takes more than, say 60 seconds to see if the original decision was wrong then it clearly isn't a clear and obvious error.

For offside, to account for the dubious nature of whether the lines are in the right place etc. maybe have a corridor of uncertainty rather than specific lines. If it's in that corridor then, like cricket, it's "umpires call" and you go with the on-field decision.

Needs to be similar to cricket, only 2 or 3 per team per game and the captain decides if he wants to have a review. If the ref is right then a review is lost. Not perfect but better than the farce we have currently.

With 2 or 3 per team captains could afford to appeal just about every goal / penalty / red card they wanted to.

As I have said before - appeal has to be specific. For example Adebayo was offside. If he was onside but Morris handled in the build up, the goal stands and the challenge is lost. Would greatly reduce "speculative" challenges.

Re: What is the worst thing about VAR?

Posted by MG on 30/11/2023, 10:02:35, in reply to "Re: What is the worst thing about VAR?"

Yes that would be better but you'd still have the process of waiting to see if there's an appeal, presumably with a timer, communicate that to the ref, then to the Var and then the review.

And I think most late goals would likely be reviewed at pretty much any excuse, especially for offside.

Maube 2..same principles as cricket. if its a correct call you keep your review

I think the issue comes when interpretation is required for instance in many of the hand ball calls. If Stockley Park suggests it could be deliberate when originally it wasn't given then confusions can occur.

Even worse is the dreaded "VAR check" that pops up after a minute.

To be fair on saturday I didnt mind VAR when it pulled up the handball (Chong was appealing for it straight after). Even then though there is "hope" when you concede that it "might" be overuled. It takes out that righteous wronged anger element.

Then our first goal - celebrate then spot the dreaded "checking offside" after about a minute. It did mean the winner i was willing the game to kick off again...it just seemed there may have been an offisde for brown to steal in there (even though nowhere near)

The handball was right in front of us. It was so obvious that I would have been very annoyed if it had stood. If we had scored it, I certainly wouldn't have been celebrating. You could see from his reaction that he knew that he had handled it.

To be fair..Joe Taylors one at wembley was right in front of me (well sort of) - i didn`t spot it at the time and it was about as obvious. id see some suggesting the palace player should be booked for it..not for me...ball to hand.. no goal but freekick was the right outcome

Re: What is the worst thing about VAR?

It was right in front of me and I said handball before Taylor scored. I didn't celebrate. If it had stood, I would have missed out on celebrating probably the most important goal in our history but I was absolutely convinced that it would be disallowed.

                        Absolutely:

'YE..oh, hang on, is it? He's not offside is he? Handball? Hangnail? Sideways glance? Is it? yeah, ah fuck it'

Still, ruined orgasms are a thing so maybe someone likes it.
