    Sean Dyche on MOTD2

Posted by StanBaker on 27/11/2023, 12:48:32

Sean Dyche on MOTD2 says he thinks most people in football believe Everton's punishment "unjust".

I think he might be right regarding those people associated with most clubs in English top two divisions, but only because they fear similar punishment.
Most in football (and beyond) would surely wonder how a club NEVER out of the PL could lose over £1M over 3 years, yet alone the £1.24M Everton have lost.
I keep reading that the overspend is on the new stadium. So what! Tt's still the same business. Ask every other club that has built new stadia in recent years, and then struggled on the pitch for results.

Sadly just reflects how ridiculous finances in football (and this country as a whole) have become.

You’re getting your millions and your hundreds of millions mixed up.

I see where he's coming from. They've received a worse punishment then Pompey did for actually going into administration. But that was also 13 odd years ago now and equally, they've broken rules they signed up.

It's only £19m etc but that £19m should have been removed from their paying budget over that time and could have easily been the difference between them staying up or going down.

Chelsea and City's charges seem far more serious and they should be worried shitless about what is coming their way. Especially as City were essentially found guilty by UEFA and only escaped due to it being time barred - something which it isn't under PL rules.

It just seems ridiculous that few clubs at the top level can run at a profit, and then have the gall to complain that a lose of over £1M over 3 years is not enough.
The rule is set, break the rule and expect to be punished. Personally I feel they've got off lightly. Like a player who's seen a yellow card that could have been red they should be keeping quite.
Moan about in the dressing room to motivate the team and local media to rally your fans, but not to national media.

They lost £124 million, which is over £19 million more than what is allowed

I assume you mean £100M and not £1M

              Yes sorry you're correct.

Not concentrating on the actual figure and the 10s of millions involved, more the principal that what a laughable "business" football has become and the gall of a club, any club, to complain in Everton's situation.

Football has stored all these problems up and ignored dodgy financing and cheating for years, even decades. And now, with the threat of the regulator looming over them are taking belated action to address it

It's too late. Nothing will happen to City and Chelsea now. And then Everton will successfully appeal because of that. I predict that their points deduction will be suspended for a year on appeal.

It will need the regulator having very strong powers. Setting the terms of what constitutes rule-breaking as well as the punishments involved. Also committing to clubs reporting their accounts on time (give or take a month) or it's trouble for that club

But they have a fight on. We now have nation states and mysterious individuals or groups controlling a lot of top end clubs. They have too much power (and too much wealth) and they won't let go of that power lightly. Expect some more crying and more threats to leave the country from the big/rich clubs

                  Totally agree with all.

For "even decades" there's the Spurs story from last week. Daniel Levy is viewed, for many years, as a shrewd football businessman.

Who's paying for the regulator? A new levy on football clubs, primarily PL clubs?

Good question. I should know but I don't! It should be paid for by football. I'm not sure who pays for other regulators. Does the energy sector pay for OFGEM? Could be a conflict of interest there

But, at the same time, probably not fair on the taxpayer to fund it either

Yes, an argument I've seen is that it's unfair because Chelsea and City haven't been punished. Their cases are more complex, so are still running, and you can bet they are spending a lot more than Everton on their legal team . . . going to be much harder cases to prosecute as a result.

If guilty then they *should* be in for a world of pain.

It's very annoying when they're whingeing about what a terrible punishment 10 points is, and how no club's ever been treated so harshly.
