Lower League Opposition
Posted by Vidar Riseth on 27/9/2023, 10:00:24
Is that we don't really care about these cup competitions or have we just become so used to playing as the underdog in recent years that we are not set up to dominate teams?
Granted we as fans would love to have gone further in the cup, but the timing before 2 games in 7 days where we realistically need 2-3 points to have any chance at all this season is not great.
Last night wasn't as bad as Grimsby but other clubs at this level are able to make 10 changes and cruise through so fixture pile up is not an issue for them. Performances in the league have improved but we are looking really short on numbers which is the main concern going into these 2 games. May almost have been better choosing the best XI and trying to get some much needed goals in the side.
Plenty of teams lose to lower league teams in the cup. Countless examples. Of course we don't have a great squad but losing to Exeter is not really particularly significant in the wider context
Some managers are just rubbish in cups. Apart from Grimsby last season, Edwards lost at home to MK while at Watford, and to St Albans for FGR the season before.
He obviously prioritises the league, even more so this season. A lot of tactical work clearly goes into each game but I suspect this week the analysts were working on Everton rather than Exeter, whatever is said in public
EPL teams go out to lower league opposition every year don't they? They don't all "cruise" through by any means.
We are still operating on what's probably just an upper half Championship budget aren't we? There's no magic quality level you get just for having the Premiership label.
We are starting to look perhaps a little shy on numbers, which is exactly why playing the first XI last night wouldn't have been a good idea.
Yes while Everton and Chelsea dealt out 2-1 thrashings to AFCW and Doncaster in the previous round while Sheffield United gallantly got a 0-0 draw at home to Lincoln in the last round before succumbing on penalties.
