    The law is an arse

All this talk of the penalty on Saturday .... there seems to be a view that the deflection off the guys foot should in some way negate the handball ..... does this mean if the ball is on its way into the net and a player dives on the floor the ball hits his knee then he can punch it away ,,,,,, its all just madness

For me, the craziest thing is the idea that a player can be given discretion when the deflection comes off the same player?!

I mean, deflections off other players is understandable - but if it deflects off you, then you and you some are the one responsible for it!

The deflection rule was removed. It's simple. Did his arm make his body unatturally bigger. Yes, therefore it's a penalty. Where is the dilemma?

Yes, and whatever anyone thinks of Gary Lineker it is embarrassing that he can be paid that much to comment on a game where he can't even be bothered to make sure he knows the latest rules / guidance. Surely that's a basic minimum? I've lost count of the times I've just seen him talk about he doesn't understand the rules and I fast forward through 90% of the chat and analysis on MOTD.

              Mike Dean agreed with Lineker.

Mike Dean on sky is an embarrassment..along with Tim Sherwood who also called it a ridiculous decision

Would they all think it was wrong if it was on the goal line and preventing a goal ........ or more interesting if it was in our box

                    Agree re Mike Dean.

I lost all respect for him when he admitted he refused to overturn a decision as the VAR ref because it might cause his mate who was the actual ref that day some more grief.

                      Chris Foy didn't.

But if you listened to Lineker you'd often hear him say he doesn't understand the rules.

I once met Lineker. Dennis Wise was at the same event. Despite their reputations, Wise came across as a much nicer person.

what never booked Lineker ...... in those days they didn't give bookings for diving and cheating did they

If that's the law then Joe Taylor scored the winner at Wembley.

                    We will have that re-instated.

No, because the handball led directly to a goal. If he’d squared to Morris the goal may have counted (see Gordon’s assist for Newcastle yesterday). Though could still have argued that Taylor’s arm was in an unnatural position.

If the ball hits a hand and leads to a goal it's an indirect free kick, so it's a different rule to when the penalty was given which would have had to be for a deliberate action or deliberately making his body bigger by outstreching his arm. I must admit I have no recollection whether the ref signalled for an indirect free kick at Wembley or not, but assume he did.

And yes I think it's ridiculous that the same action is a free kick at one end of the pitch and not the other. But that's the rules.

For me the arm position was very unnatural - I don't really see why the deflection should make a difference when the hand is so far away from the body in effect making the defender twice as big and offering a major advantage for the defending team . As others have said we did not get penalty against West Ham so basically it is what it is

it seems to me that all decisions made should support the personal view of all the pundits. The pundits really don't like that we are gatecrashing the premier league and we are not following their preferred Everton business model.
