    Ogbene's disallowed goal

    Posted by Maah001 on 24/9/2023, 11:53:59

Watching the highlights, was much closer to being onside than I thought at the time sitting just behind level with the touchline in the DP.

    Correct decision, but so close.

Re-name him Kawasaki Ogbene, he's running on a 1000cc engine

Yes, I'm just thankful I caught sight of the flag going up straight away. We were genuinely unlucky not to get all three points yesterday, whatever that fantasist O'Neill thinks about his team controlling the game.

Since it came off a Wolves player doesn't that make him onside? Or have the rules changed again.

That's the point Forest fans were making a couple of seasons ago when they had one disallowed, but they were wrong as well.

As Random says, it has to be a deliberate play from the defending player, not just a deflection/ block.

Not only that but the ball goes forward before the deflection so he is offside at that point

That's not the case because he is not offside until he becomes active. If the defender deliberately plays it before he becomes active then he is onside.

Just because it hit his body surely doesn't mean he wasn't deliberately playing it. I mean he was trying to get his body in the way to block the shot.

Yes, the word "deliberate" really is misleading. I think it's more that the defender has to be aiming to play the ball with an element of control. So, deflecting off a block doesn't count as "deliberate" because what he's actually trying to do is block the ball, not play it in any particular direction.

Only if the wolves player deliberately played the ball.

Is putting your body in the way to block a shot not deliberately playing it?
