    The 25th man

Posted by Cigar chap on 23/9/2023, 19:53:24

In a game when we dominated almost all possession we created few clear chances and those that we did we didn’t work the keeper.

Isn’t it clear to the manager that we are missing an established striker.

After getting this far I am still shocked that we haven’t tried something in the free agent market to try and tilt things in our favour.

We had chances against West Ham that we rushed, we hit the post at Fulham and rushed other chances and today we again hit the post and failed to get another decent shot on target, a few weak headers.

For all our improvement we just need to swallow the wage situation and see who we can get and then I really do think we can justifiably compete.

The rewards if it works are vast.

The costs if it doesn’t aren’t huge.

Spending just a bit more to give us a chance is VERY different to spending and wasting money.

We were a Paul Walsh or Garth Crooks from winning today.

4 games in and plenty calling Ross Barkley a waste of money.
            No guarantees out there.
Best to have a process, one that's been very successful, and stick with it.

Fair point but we allowed two other goalscorers to go out on loan, both who at least had more prolific records albeit at lower levels.

Taylor could have stayed and not even been named in the 25.

There are actually a few out of contract strikers who we could sign.

I just feel we need to take that chance.

                The rewards are obvious.

We can’t dominate like that and rely on a penalty that shouldn’t have been and against ten men.

The players and we deserve better and more experience in the squad.

Most will accept relegation but today was a chance to change the narrative.

                We fluffed it.

Same with Ayew who was shite for forest last year.

Townsend is finished and also not a striker

Ayew has 3 goals in his last 43 games in the Prem, dating back to 2017. Townsend's is 32 and his scoring rate in the Prem has always been very low, although to be fair he is a winger. Stanislas is 33 and his scoring record isn't that great either. I think this kind of illustrates the point. It's really not easy to find prolific strikers at this level without spending a shedload of money (and even then it can very quickly go horribly wrong).

He almost signed for Burnley, they pulled the rug at the last minute.

Offer him wage cap limit and big bonus for goals/assists/safety that is paid once he makes an agreed number of appearances.

We can afford to and I am not sure we can afford not to.

If he fit he would offer something different and he still wants to play.

Simon Jordan then asked about the prospect of an offer from a ‘significant’ Championship side, and he replied: “I think at the moment, my aim is the Premier League.

“I want to see the season start, clubs maybe need a winger, might have injuries, might realise they’re short in that area, might need my services. So I’m going to wait probably a week or so to see if there’s any Premier League options.

“Yes [sign after the window as a free agent], but I wouldn’t want to ideally because I missed the whole of last season. I didn’t play at all so I wouldn’t want to get into a situation now where I’d probably be playing catchup If I waited until September.

“Now, I’m fully fit, I’ve just finished my stint at Burnley, I’m ready to go. I’ll probably leave it a week or so and then I’ll start branching out of the Premier League.”

The article was dated 11 August - he was going to wait "a week or so". Six weeks later, he is still waiting. Why has no other team signed him?

He says himself that he would probably be playing catch up if he left it until September.

Do we need a winger? You said yourself that we need an established striker.

                                    All very fair points.

We obviously need a goal scorer but if one isn’t available then get the best creator we can for wages only.

A fit Townsend will create chances and then maybe we will see our strikers having better returns with better chances created.

Someone said earlier that our crosses and corners are poor and today they were. Townsend would add quality there.

It’s clearly all far too late to be considering this but one goal from open play so far quite clearly isn’t good.

Would love to know if we ever decided we had enough or if something fell through close to deadline day.

If Woodrow is Plan B then we are unfortunately very unlikely to survive and that is such a shame, was sure the clubs recruitment team knew better than that.

We had twenty shots today so it wouldn't appear that creating chances is the problem so why break our salary cap for an unfit version of what we already have.

As I said, it is six weeks since that article and he still doesn't have a club.

                                      Bring back Dion

                                        Dion isn’t good enough, proven.

But that isn’t really the point.

Didn’t we convert Joe Payne to a forward?

So it's changed from Townsend is the finisher we need to Townsend is the creator we need..

He's not played for a year, is 32 and probably not good enough any more.

Woodrow showed decent chances today and when he came on against West ham. Gives a different option and can finish. Rather him than Townsend with one leg

It should never have got to a situation where we are one natural goalscorer short of being a mid table side. Total missed opportunity, the rest of the team now look up to speed.

But none of the options youve listed are natural strikers.

Lyle Taylor had one decent season.

We have better in the squad now than Townsend, Ayew, Stanislas and Taylor.

Morris was unlucky with the long shot today, and had a decent chance with the header. Scored the pen. Brown unlucky with the header last week. It will come
