    Tactical change

Posted by Shutupya on 19/9/2023, 9:37:57

Did we abandon our aggressive high press style too soon? It didn't work away against Brighton or Chelsea but they (well Brighton at least) are decent sides ... Obviously there was a big change in tactics Saturday that had some success but ultimately the same result.

By the way this is a genuine question, not claiming to know the answer

Pressing players at this level is incredibly difficult, much more so than I realised, 3 passes and they are out, hence the tactical change, may not be the same for every game. On chances, xg etc we should have got something out of Saturday, many times we would have. Part of the problem imo is that the players think they need to be quicker and do more to score goals, hence Morris’ snatched chance and Locks attempt to guide the header in the corner. Last year Morris would have taken a touch and Locks would have thumped it at the goal. It will come

Agree about that Morris chance. He had so much more time than he realised. The defender was so flat footed.

I think we're really missing Clark and Osho.
Both have the confidence to keep the ball and not panic in possession. Tbf Chong has been really good at that this season. It's just a shame he was so isolated after that break on Saturday or that might have been a goal.

Look at the goal for Brighton against Utd, they kept the ball for 100 seconds before scoring. It's too simple to say we should press, be aggressive and front footed, better players and coached teams can beat that.

What I've been impressed by RE so far is that he's had a different plan for each game and tactically things have worked as we have been in games for long periods. What he can't do is make a player calmer when a chance presents itself. I do think we might revert to a Sunderland type approach for Saturday though, a bit of blood and thunder but keeping our heads. Wolves are excellent on the transition.

It’s too simple to say we shouldn’t press.

We are second worst for pressing in the PL so far (ie we don’t even try) whereas last year we were one of, if not, the best in the Championship.

Whilst there will be many better technical players in other teams, I do not believe there will be many better at pressing than we were 4 months ago.

Why have we abandoned one of our key strengths?

              I think we've adapted it.

The Fulham game is the only one I haven't seen this season, but from the sounds of it (and from watching the highlights) it was the closest we've come to getting some points. We had 4 or 5 very decent chances.

                Those chances at Fulham were;
                Chong
                Morris
                Brown
                Bell
                Lockyer

Chong's probably the most difficult but on another day at least one of those goes in.
