Best way to win promotion?

Chatting with a fellow Hatter last night and couldn't agree on this:
Was gaining promotion via the play-offs better than winning automatic promotion?
Would you have preferred to be sitting at home, already promoted, watching four other teams thrash out the POs or does winning the PO final make this type of promotion that much sweeter?
Apart from the stress levels in the days leading up to the PO matches (and the even higher stress level trying to purchase a bloody final ticket from Ticketmaster!), I now have the Sunderland home tie and the final firmly etched into my 'best ever' Luton memories.
Automatic promotion, IMO, would not have felt so rewarding.
From a completely practical perspective I'd far rather go up automatically as you can start preparing for the new season a few weeks earlier than if you go up via the playoffs, in terms of transfers and in our case ground upgrades.
Very satisfying going up as Champions. You are the best team in that league. And I guess from a logistics point of view gives you bit more time for the following season However , last week was pretty special wasn't it
