How losing the Championship play-off final can wreck a club

Not sure if this has been linked here previously...
Interesting article in The Athletic reporting how Huddersfield nearly died after the play-off final last year. I'm sure that Coventry will be better equipped to bounce back but, of the 23 Championship play-off finals played since 2000, only six losing teams were promoted the following season.
Nottingham Forest’s transfer spend last summer was £165 million! They finished 16th, 4 points clear of Leicester in 18th
In all seriousness, football has to move away from any situation where one football game can literally decide the existence of a club, much as it feels good to win this one and Coventry thankfully aren’t so badly run that their existence is in doubt. Next year, don’t count on that for the finalists.
Combination of not enough oversight into clubs finances and spending, and a totally lopsided financial model which is encourages all-or-nothing gambling essentially.

I'm glad I didn't read that piece before the final. I was nervous enough without seeing that. I mean, we'd have been ok, financially, if we didn't make it but you're right - the way the game is it's more of a financial success than a sporting one these days
That's why football has become so serious and po-faced most of the time - the money is so important whereas, previously, a relegation or failure to get promotion would be a crushing disappointment but it would NOT be an existential threat (although, funnily enough, relegation in 1975 led to all sorts of financial problems for us)
