Signings this summer for the 24-25 season

Posted by TH on 4/6/2023, 13:38:51

On the basis that, even in the PL, we can't (and shouldn't) compete on salaries with Bristol City upwards, here's my guess at the players in the club's little black book as they plan long term.

Goalkeeper - Not sure we've had real quality in this position since Beresford. Take a punt on Michael Cooper (Plymouth, age 23) or, less risky but older, Lee Nicholls (Huddersfield, 30).

Defence - Already one of our strong areas. Add Mads Andersen (Barnsley, 25) to replace Sonny.

Midfield - Pelly and Clicker at their peak but close to 30. Add Jack Rudoni (Huddersfield, 21) and Regan Slater Hall (Hull 23). Rudoni rumoured to be a previous target and we do seem to be stubborn in finally getting our man.

Forwards - Miles Leaburn (19, Charlton) already linked with Luton. 6ft 5in, long term replacement for Elijah. Colby Bishop (Portsmouth, 26). Come up through the lower leagues. Fits the Town ethos. Runaway player of the season at Portsmouth.

    YMMV!

Cooper hasn't played since February after an ACL injury so probably wouldn't be ready to play until nearly Christmas.

They have been saying start of season down here so I think he is worth a punt as well. We can’t afford any better so it’s the kind of signing we can do.

            “We can’t afford better”

I agree he is decent but I think we can afford better and there are more than Cooper well within our reach.

His ACL injury means it’s now less likely.

                Three times. All previous season.

I understand we were interested this time last year but Plymouth and Cooper were not.

                Burnley also made enquiries.

He is decent but personally I think there are better available for less.

Plymouth will ask silly money, as they were last year.

Plymouth still finished as champions without him for a large chunk of the season.

I would take a look at their defence as the reason why.

In the same way Bournemouth and Leicester were interested in Stacey and JJ.

Who is better and available and how do you know how much they will be sold for?

Do you work for BBC “Fact Check”?

This routine is rather dull if all you can say is “prove it”.

                    Whatever floats etc.

Personally I think the Rotherham keeper is better and won’t cost as much.

Not quite as dull as your routine to list off random footballers that you spotted on Championship Manager and claim to be an expert on.

Bearing in mind we have played twice against said player this season it’s hardly CM inspired.

In the 1-1 game he did impress.

He was also their Player of the Season.

Best get on the blower to Mick then and demand he gets the cheque book out.

Jason Knight - derby centre mid

        Also, Ben Wiles Rotherham captain

Seen Cooper play once in the season just ended. Great shot stopper. Saved two one-on-one situations. Distribution was a bit variable.

If the character of the player is right for us, I would agree. We would have a very strong Championship squad, possibly capable of holding its own in the bottom regions of the PL.

Going to need a LOT better quality than that if we want any chance of survival. You’re building a Championship side there…

With the exception of Andersen, I don't think we would outbid any Championship rivals for the players on that list unless we had gone up. Got to use promotion to our advantage for the long term.

What quality players that will help us to survive can we afford? Genuinely interested...

I’d be picking off the carcasses of Leicester, Leeds and Soton. Must be a few gems there that we can attract with the prospect of first team football.

Also top end Championship players who may not get up next year - Hamer, Wallace etc

That said I expect. with the exceptions of Nakamba and Drameh, we won’t have heard of any of them. I expect some obscure foreign lads turning up from the four corners of the earth.

I think we will go the prem loan market. We will pay minimum loan fee but we will add a few good championship players that we think could step up. We will have a strict wage structure that if we do go down we will not be under pressure. I noted that g.s said we would try and add quality so we could be competitive in the prem.
