What first attracted you to Luton Town FC?

Posted by Gluton Free Arsenal Two on 3/6/2023, 12:38:59

Someone asked me that question this week. My first answer was family, as I am a third generation Hatter with my kids and grand kids now also following. Then I added the atmosphere at Kenilworth Road and the star players who get you on the edge of your seat, despite critics thinking we are a long ball team. For me it was Rioch, French, McDonald, Aston, the Futcher Bros, Hatton, Moss, Stein, Hill, Harford, Preece, Hartson, Oakes, Valois, Howard, Thorpe, McSheffrey, Gray, Guttridge, McCormick & now Clark, Adeybayo & Morris. We have been blessed with some wonderful talent over the years and long may that continue. What about everyone else?

Moved from the far southeast of England to Luton in 1982, lived in a bedsit on Crawley Road. Decided on a whim one evening to go to football - league cup game against Charlton.

When you grew up watching Colin Clewlow and Alan Fursdon playing Southern League football, Seeing Ricky Hill and Paul Walsh was like football from another planet.

My old man used to take me to the odd game in the lates 70's, early 80's. I have to admit it though, I was a Spurs fan at the time.

Went to a soccer school where Godfrey Ingram ran the session. Part of the deal was Junior Hatters tickets (when it was in the Oak).

Me and my mate went on our own. It was v Derby and pretty sure it was 0-0. We were under strict instruction to get the bus back to Putteridge from the West Side Centre, which we did. It pulled into the bus station, right into a huge scrap between Derby and Luton skinheads. That was me hooked!

As a sideline, one of the drills that Godfrey Ingram taught us was how to get over the ball when hitting a half volley. Only thing I can remember about the game was Godfrey ballooning a half volley onto the roof of the Oak!

              Good days

Not a question I can answer as I’ve always been a fan. Dad took me when I was very young, the bond was made and will never break.

I've always been a fan of Luton Town. When I was a kid it seemed to be a popular choice to pick a so called fashionable team, which I partially blame on having no one to let me know you should support your home town. I started seeing Luton quite a bit in the 80s and 90s but for some reason it was always against the likes of Man Utd, Arsenal etc. My godmother was dating Andy Dibble at the time so we used to get free tickets for rhe big games. Fast forward to the 2000s and a messy divorce meant I still couldnt afford a season ticket.

In 2006 I started going to see matches quite regularly and then met my new partner with whom I had 2 more children and a step son I call my own. I made a decision in 2011 that I had to buy a season ticket for myself and my son, and we started going every week. When my other lad was born in 2008 I had also said that when is is old enough I would get him a ST too. He has now been going since 2012. I firmly believed that I owed it to the club and my town to put money their way when they needs it most. I've said many times before that I believe if my father had done the same with ne that I would have started following Luton more at a younger age , which is why I made sure my lads were raised as Luton.

Had some of my best days out watching Luton, and last week was rhe pinnacle. It made all those cold nights against Hyde and Barrow worth it, and I'm so happy that I got a ST when I did.

The only decent thing he ever did.

And yet my old man never took me as the pub seemed more important. I love him, but he knows he let us all down. The only thing I will say was that we never went without anything and always had what was needed!

Up to the age of about 10/11 I supported Liverpool (as did most of my mates at the time) my older brothers mate was a big Luton fan, he chased me around the block of a Hightown Road telling me I had to support my home town team.

By the end I gave up, exhausted, watched a game or 2 involving Luton and caught the bug, never looked back. Tough love that really worked for me.

Probably the same story at all clubs. Everyone thinks "their" club is special. To be fair, they are all right. Lifetime memories of players and games. Joy and despair.
That is why it is much better supporting a club and not a paid for brand. Again, to be fair, even the "big" teams have local/family supporters.

It seems my first game was in my mother's arms in 1952.
First real game I sort of remember was V WBA in 1958 ( Still got the programme).
It's in my blood , part of my DNA. If Luton folded I probably wouldn't watch football

when i was young, my mates suggested going to football, we had never been before. So we asked our parents for 1/2 a crown so we could go, and off we went. Bus from the hospital to the bottom of Oak Road, 2/- to get in. Up the stairs and the fantastic green pitch, i had never seen anything like it. Sept 25 ish 1963, Luton 0 - 2 Brentford. i was hooked. 4 young boys walked home stopping off at the chippie at the top of Kingsway for a bag of chips all still excited and looking forward to our next visit.

My parents had no interest in sport. One weekday our neighbours took my brother and me to Kenilworth Road for an evening match.

Welcome to the Main Stand, somewhere above the tunnel. The lights, the noise, the crowds! Aged 11, I'd never seen that many people in one place at one time. I was enthralled. Apart from the small Markyate contingent, everyone at my school in Hemel supported W*tford. I was quite happy being in the minority, especially after the promotions to Division 3 then to Division 2.

Three years later the family moved to Norfolk and I rarely saw a game.

When I moved to the East End I went whenever I had a Saturday free and the fixture looked interesting, which was not that often, maybe 3 or 4 times a season.

Then came the minus 30 season.

By about October I realised I may never again see league football at Kenilworth Road after that season. I started going regularly.

Relegation to non-League. "OK, we'll go straight back up. I'll support the club while we're in the Conference."

After a couple of seasons I realised I was totally hooked again and a season ticket was less than I'd been paying at the turnstiles. More than a decade later I am a season ticket holder at the Premier League club which will probably get the most press and media coverage come the afternoon of 12th August!

                                COYRRH!!!

My dad and my brother used to go, and we always looked out for the results, cheering when Luton won.
Then in 1968, someone at youth club said "important match tonight, fancy going?" So a crowd of us got the bus down, in through the Oak Road boys' entrance, climbed the steps and there we were, winning the Division 4 title.
                                    Hooked.

Some brilliant stories here, sounds like a journey for most of us.
I'm the youngest of 7, (3 older brothers and 3 sisters) having none of the 6 liking football, my influence came from outside. I still hold my brothers mate on the pedestal and am thankful he showed me the way, the truth and the life

First game at Luton 1958, to watch (mainly out of curiosity) the post-Munich Man Utd. My brother and I couldn't see anything, so were handed
down over everybody's heads to the front of the Enclosure.

A year or so later my Dad got a car, and decided W*tford was nearer to Hemel than Luton. Spent a few so-so years watching the odd good
player such as Cliff Holton, Sammy Chung, etc., but it was usually fairly boring/frustrating.
Then we tagged on to the tail-end of the 1968 promotion team, and when we saw Rioch, French, Slough and co., there was only one place
we wanted to watch football. And so it stayed, through thick and thin.
Despite living in Germany for 42 years, I have always (except for one Conference year) got back a few times annually to watch the Town.
But last Saturday (together with 1988 final) topped the lot.

Really enjoyed all the posts here. Like many others it was us schoolkids who populated the Oak Road end - partly so as not to get wet on the Kenilworth Road open terrace.

Born in Luton, dad a gateman, Syd Owen presented our school sports medals, would see players on the buses - all played into it being ‘in the blood’. Last Saturday was like a return to those ‘proper times’ in Division 1 when few teams were feared in any way.

But last Saturday was more than that. The emotional bonds to the club were only strengthened during the ups and downs and the descent into the Conference (though some of that surprisingly proved quite enjoyable). Saturday not only saw the tears well up for nostalgic reasons (what we were) but especially for the achievement by all at the club beyond anything previous for us, the Luton fans, and the town.

My old fashioned handwritten letters are winging their way to Gary Sweet and Nick Owen. Done so in the past and always had replies. How could I support any other team?

Finally, as a dedicated ‘we really should be playing in black and white’ advocate, the display of orange and the special triumph of the day has won me over. Orange through and through now!
