Luton's greatest game?
Posted by Carling on 30/5/2023, 13:25:28
Does Saturday eclipse Man City, Derby County, Arsenal, S####horpe and any other personal greatest match you hold high for whatever reason. It does for me.
I think for the simple fact that Saturday ensures we have funding for the new stadium, makes it the greatest win in our history.
We'll probably get relegated next season but with prudent spending could easily bounce back the following season. By then we won't be far off moving into the new ground.
In many respects of we go down. Its not really the point. however Remember when Jamie Vardy was in his prime for Leicester and people said ooh he's got the hunger etc because of where he came from , well. We've got a whole squad of players with the same story, all got to the top the hard way.
The game has changed massively since the 80s (and even the 90s) so, in terms of being a club-defining/building/transforming game, then Saturday is the greatest ever. And the way we won it too - on penalties - was obviously hugely dramatic with one of those mental winning moments
Far, far more significant than the Derby and Scunny games as fun as those 2 days were
The Arsenal League Cup Final was the best for quality and entertainment
Yes, I wouldn't want to pick one but Saturday has to be one of the most momentous beyond any shadow of a doubt.
But when you think about what followed the win at Maine Road which helped us keep that team together I think it also has to be right up there. What Saturday did may well overshadow that but only time will tell for sure.
'88? Well it was the crowning achievement of those years, and I'd say was equally dramatic given how the match went.
Yeah for different reasons there's not much to separate City 1983, Arsenal 1988 and Cov 2023
It's just that Cov 2023 transforms this football club in a way those other 2 games didn't really do and combined with a current ownership structure that blows the 80s ownership out of the water. I mean within hours of beating City, the bell ends that were then in charge announced they wanted to move us to MK. FFS
All true but . . . Man City was transformational in the sense that had we not stayed up that team may well have been broken up and probably 1988 would not have followed.
I suppose that the main thing is that we HAVE had all three .
All true but . . . Man City was transformational in the sense that had we not stayed up that team may well have been broken up and probably 1988 would not have followed.
Indeed. Yeah, I hear that
What times we Hatters are living in
I still can't quite believe we're a top flight club once again. Extraordinary achievement. As the Sky commentator said when I was watching it back the other night - "the greatest story in the history of the English game..."
Yes in terms of financial reward and future security. But the 1988 League Cup win is up there with the greatest of days in terms of footballing achievement.
I’m sure the board will act fairly and rationally with hikes in salaries for the prem, whilst including relegation clauses.
And I know we hate them, but parachute payments need not just be used to make up a shortfall in wages and TV income, if 2020 cut their cloth accordingly of course.
different times though isn't it, for me being at Wembley to see them beat Arsenal will always be the pinnacle because growing up as a kid you dreamt of seeing it.
