Can't those who are working also enjoy their Friday's?

You could use the time wisely by eliminating inappropriate apostrophes when creating plurals.

1/. Not all posts that bear my name on this thread are actually posted by me.

2/. Whilst the above was by me I actually did think about it for a while and whilst Fridays is plural, the "Friday" element is possessive belonging to "those working" therefore, on balance, I thought an apostrophe was required although I confess I'm not entirely sure.

                  No, it's not required.
An apostrophe should only be used to indicate an omitted letter (as in "it's" in my first sentence) or to show possession (e.g. "the vicar's stipend").
To show possession of a plural word ending in "s", place the apostrophe after the "s", e.g. "the fans' forum".

Unless Friday is possessing something, either stated of implicit, the apostrophe is erroneous, and therefore of the Grocers' variety.

                      How about
                      Friday's timetable :
Get up, Get dressed. Put the washing in the machine.

That's not a timetable, as no times are mentioned.
It would be Friday's agenda. And not a very interesting one.

How about homer's timetable? (Or homers' as he has imposterers)

12.05am say good morning on Outlaws
                        12.15pm think about getting up
                        1.15pm get up
2.15pm write another chapter of Odyssy
8.15pm post shit on Outlaws (or Outlaws' MB)

Definitely does not need an apostrophe - there can NEVER be an apostrophe in the creation of a plural, and if it refers to a singular Friday the apostrophe is, in any case , superfluous.

Posted by Godders on 24/3/2023, 12:12:24, in reply to "Re: For those not working today"

Are you sure? I'm not convinced either way.

But my understanding is that if something belongs to a group of people then the plural still needs an apostrophe. For example a Smith family living in a house, then I would write, "The Smith's house". As such the pluralisation of Smith remains Smith but uses an apostrophe to determine possession. But that's when a plural is used in the context of a single entity ie a family unit (my point being that a family, by definition, presupposes more than one person).

Friday's child has far to go...

Posted by Suffolk Punch on 24/3/2023, 15:36:40, in reply to "Re: For those not working today"

It would then be the Smiths' house (plural). Or the Smith family's house (singular). Or if there were more than one Smith family living in said house, the Smith families' house.

The Smith's house indicates there's only one Smith. And if he's known as Smithy, it would be Smithy's house rather than Smithies' house.

Or if said Smith or Smithy was a blacksmith, it would be correct to refer to Smith's house as "the smithy".

                          For fcuk's sake!

The fact that you are unconvinced is irrelevant to the accuracy of my statement - The ####ing apostrophe is NOT correct...now back off !!!

Re: For those not working today

The family collectively are the Smiths.
Therefore it would be the Smiths' house.

Re: For those not working today

So an apostrophe is required then?

Re: For those not working today

                                  Yes.
Of course you could always refer to the house where the Smiths live as "the Smith residence" (shades of Hyacinth Bucket if you remember Keeping up Appearances).
