    Yet another interest rate rise.

Up by another 0.25%. Is that the only tool that the Bank of England has got? This apparently to suppress demand. I just can’t believe that demand is the driver of inflation now.

      and... rates of tax...

I bet if you took the broader range of 'tax' into your calculation, you'd be shocked how much of your earnings and income goes in tax. If you take PAYE, NI, VAT, fuel duty, council tax, it probably in excess of 40% for most ordinary people. Outsider is probably well up on this. And young people still have a terrible job affording housing. Renting or buying.

With interest at soaring levels people's demand for all but the very basic things is all but zero - unless you're wealthy and therefore rubbing your hands at the prospect of increased interest in your savings. As always these policies benefit the already wealthy at the expense of the poor.

You've got to have a massive amount of savings to get a decent interest rate.

Homes will be lost by hard pressed home owners, still the Tories have previous on this and still they get voted in. I think i recall 15% in the late 80s under the Witch

It was 15% and those of us who had mortgages in those days just had to cut our cloth accordingly, prioritise the paying of mortgage, utility bills, insurances etc.

We did without the luxuries many accept today as norm, we gave up holidays, visiting pubs, football and there were no good banks either.

Yet we managed to feed ourselves and our children. No takeaways either, we cooked with what we had at home.

Cut your cloth and stop moaning.

We're supposed to be a first world country, mate.

Still, as long as you get to jut your jaw while you tell us all how HARD you had it...

              Cheers, Jim

                  You absolute ####ing trooper.

This country owes everything to the older generation, "boomers" I believe they're often known as, if only they would mention their heroism and sacrifice a bit more often.

Change the record Spix, you come out with all that guff every time. You sound like Grandpa Simpson. It's not the 1960s now - and funnily enough you brag about how well off you were back then when it suits you. No wonder everyone thinks you're a serial liar.

Don't be stupid, mortgages were mostly much smaller compared to salaries back then and tax take as a percentage of earnings was also lower. And plenty of people lost their homes even so.

There are large numbers of people who were already going without those luxuries you mention and then some.
