Who’s that then?? As someone who played for Star Juniors and Star FC (when we were too old for the Chiltern Youth League) I can’t think of any of the team who became a Luton superstar. Most were pupils at Icknield…
If you know Gary Caswell (his dad ran Star Juniors and Stan was the 'coach' until he walked out), Gerry Meade, Pete Harrington, John Bascombe etc. then you may well know me. I played for them for a couple of seasons in the 12-14 league, then I joined the 'superstar' team Dynamos for 1 season (Gary Hills and Dennis Bevis were at the same school as me). Didn't enjoy that experience, so stopped playing for a season. Bumped into Gary in the town centre one day and he asked me who I was playing for now. I said no-one, and his dad phoned me that evening asking if I'd like to go back - which I did. Continued to play for them in 16-18 league then on to the North Home Counties League as Star FC. We also played South Midlands League on Saturdays as Lockhart Bennet...
Were you an Icknield boy as well then?? I may have got Pete Harrington's name wrong - we had another player, a pacey forward/winger, his first name was Ian and it might be he was Ian Harrington and Pete (midfielder) had a different surname. I also think the keeper for Star Juniors was called David Smith(?). Don't recall us starting to play as Lockhart Bennet until around 1976/77...
Joey Smith was some player. We played in central defence together for a good few years. His older brother scored Barton’s goal when they lost the FA Vase final at Wembley. If it’s the same Lewis, he was a year or soolder than us, and was captain when I first signed for Star Juniors. He left and started playing for FC Lygetun (probably spelled wrong). Dave Vass played 16-18 then for Star Fc going forwards. He played for Dynamos the season I was with them as well. Dougal Harvey was a Halyards lad, played with Emerald Boys Club first off (all the Halyard team played for them) and we joined as fullbacks when Dynamos came calling. We were both picked up for LTFC’s youth team that season, along with Gary Hills. Oddly though, the one name I can’t place is Sandor Simon… 🤔🤔
I'm the same age as Lewis, so the 2 of us were a year older. We must have missed playing in the same team as I played centre half with Joe that season, we won the Ray Knights trophy beating Limbury Boys Club 3-1 in the final, I think Sandor scored a hatrick. He would have signed apprenticeship forms at Luton soon after that. I am fairly sure he never made a first team league appearance but was sub away at Newcastle on one occasion in the days where there was only one sub. Sandor would be a year younger than you, he played up a year.
If you do Facebook there is a site called "Local Luton Local Leagues Football Memories". It has lots of posts about local football with over 4000 members, it's worth a look if you haven't seen it.
That would explain it. I played in the Ray Knights final against Limbury BC when we lost 3-1 at Totterhoe’s ground, as well as losing the County Cup semifinal against them at 61FC by the same score. In each game we missed a sitter to go 2 up, then conceded 2 in 2 minutes. That FB group is is really good. Just joined and already found stuff about Star Juniors and Dynamos. Thanks for the tip…
No problem, there are some good photos, programmes ect on there. There are two names on that match report I don't recognise, so you are obviously one of those, but I am sure I would have known of you and played against you back in the 70s. Back then I played for Luton Rangers.
