Luton on TV last night, and tonight

Posted by Blik on 21/3/2023, 14:20:00

Do you think the series live in police custody paints an unfair picture of Luton? The programmes are interesting and worrying. I used to see a Met police officer a few years ago and I remember him saying that if members of the public had to spend a week out seeing and dealing with the people and situations the police face all the time then they might be a bit more understanding. In a huge organisation like that there will be bad apples but I feel sorry for all the decent officers. Most of the public wouldn't want to deal with what those police officers face.

Having to deal with the situations and people they face is the job. It shouldn’t be an excuse for institutional racism, misogyny and homophobia.
And to think there’s posters on here that regularly claim that the Police Service is too “woke”.

Recently had a city here in California (the citizens) hold a de-fund the police march and then had the audacity to call the aforementioned police to ask them help organize the March🤔🤔🤔🤔

The Police. But being a white, heterosexual, cis male, I’m statistically less likely to encounter one of the so called “bad apples”.
Who should Sarah Everard have called?

I think the point Bilk is making that the majority of them are decent but put up with horrific behaviour from the public every day .
No denying a small proportion of football fans are total nobs …I expect that leads to unfair bias against those of us that behave at games.
In every work sector you have bigots who hopefully get called out ..not sure why we would expect there not to be any bad apples in a work force of 125K .

I think the fact that the report has labeled the Met’s problems as institutionalised contradicts entirely the idea that it’s “a few bad apples” and certainly is evidence that they’re not “being called out”.

The report couldn't do anything else ,You can't defend the indefensible. The problem is the numbers and situations should be put in perspective. This problem could be found in every other major police force in the World, often far worse. That doesn't make the problems acceptable of course but goes some way in creating perspective.

I think downplaying the Met’s very real problems by describing them as being down to “a few bad apples”, or suggesting we should consider who and what they have to deal with, or positing that every other major police force is just as bad or far worse IS trying to defend the indefensible.

Not at all . It’s being realistic and recognising that the police force are human so will have flaws.
The majority are good like you but a very small number are badly behaved like me ( just kidding I am a Saint ).
They reflect society and to recognise that our police force is decent and show them some respect is no bad thing imo.

Either you don’t know what institutional racism, misogyny and homophobia is, or you’re arguing that the Met Police are just a reflection of our society, which means our society is therefore systematically racist, misogynistic and homophobic.
Either way, these absolutely contradict the excuse that it’s down to “a few bad apples” because that’s not what institutionalised (or systemic) means.

I know what it means ….I think it’s a statement made way to easily and in this case incorrect .
If you genuinely believe that the Met are more racist , misogynistic, homophobic etc than the UK population then I think you are very wrong .

Who to believe? A cross bench peer who has specialised in homelessness, the welfare of victims and witnesses to crime, and troubled families and who has spent over a year examining the evidence.
Or someone who hasn’t, and just thinks the report is incorrect.
                          Tough one.

If the appalling attitudes and are described as "institutional" and failings as "systemic", a description accepted by the Met Commissioner, that would suggest there are more than a "a few bad apples".
