    Double jeopardy

Whatever happened to rule ... you know if a pen is given its not a red card?

A foul committed during an attempt to play the ball would not mean a red card for the denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.

A deliberate handball would not be an attempt to play the ball.

        Thanks for the definition

Was it deliberate players have arms and Willian didn't actually raise his from his side...

That said having seen some of the ones we have conceded I no longer have a clue what is and isn't a penalty or what the rules are

It is if it prevents a goal being scored. That one did

Covered by Law 12. Denying the opposing team a goal or obvious goal scoring opportunity by handball is a sending off offence.

Agreed but I think they should deem that by giving away a penalty you have not denied an obvious goalscoring opportunity.

Penalty plus sending off is extremely harsh.

Harsh ? The rules are there. The players should know them, some don't but that's their problem.

Bottom line. Don't infringe the laws of the game and you won't get sent off.

True enough but a handball can simply be a reflex or accidental action, especially with the current rules as we have seen. It's well over the top giving a red and a pen in such cases compared with the other things you generally need to do to get sent off.

Over the top ? Your opinion. Simple fact is the laws of the game clearly deem the offence warrants the awarding of a penalty and a red card for the offending player.

As I said above, don't handle the ball when it's on it's way into your goal. Result is no offence and no sending off.

Given that nine out of ten penalties result in a goal anyway that to me seems the most sensible option. Let the goal in and then give your team a decent chance in the rest of the game by having eleven players on the pitch instead of ten, or, in Fulham's case yesterday, nine.

Well obviously it's my opinion. But you clearly like to keep things nice and simple, black and white, so I'll not worry about trying to debate nuance with you.
