    Was in Lancashire Today…

…Collecting a new car from a dealership up there.

Lad who was processing it was a die hard Burnley fan. Has visited around 50 odd of the 92 league stadiums and has KR up there as a proper football ground.

It was interesting to get his take on the PL. Aside from the obvious financial benefit, and when they first got up, it saved them from some pretty serious monetary issues, he reckons a lot of Burnley fans would probably prefer to win the league, but stay then stay in it.

It seems the PL is the promised land where those outside an elite few go to get a coating every week, and if they’re lucky, squeeze a couple of seasons out out of it. I was only 12 when it started, was Division 1 the same? I know clubs like us and Wimbledon were bucking the trend at the time by holding our own, but the divide wasn’t nearly as large as it is now, was it?

The old Div 1 was a lot less of a closed shop .... but the "elite" clubs filled the top half places with the odd well financed or coached gate crasher like (oddly after my other post slagging them off above) Nottingham Forrest upsetting the status quod

There used to be a few more local boys done good as Chairmen as well, didn’t there? Done well with a haulage firm and such like….Who was the Blackburn fella, was it Jack Walker?

You’d need to own DHL to fund PL success these days….

yes .... that was the big difference .... most clubs owned by local money or at least no overseas like it is today.
