What I hope Edwards realises…
Posted by Lutonian on 8/2/2023, 0:23:57
…is he’s not managing a club with a fan base that thinks it’s pragmatic to start with a weakened side in the FA cup. Particularly when prize money and a game vs Southampton is on offer.
Thought his reluctance to talk in the press conference about the financial benefits of winning the game showed a naivety about the importance our fans place on financial stability.
Also, because we’ve been there ourselves, we know that lower league teams should never be underestimated - and it’s a bit embarrassing when our own club do that.
I think tonight is Edwards’ first proper blot on his copy book. Far worse than WBA or Middlesbrough in my opinion. Hope he learns from it.
Get the sentiment but in the championship the majority share of our income comes from sky not gate receipts and fans. Get to the prem and that % drops to less than 1% of total income with our gates. Drop below to L1 and yes fans income is way more important to us. Don’t have an issue with Edwards team selection, all top level clubs rotate just happens our 2nd string wasn’t upto it yesterday that all.
250k is less than 2% of our annual budget. Where is the 500k figure people are talking about coming from? I doubt TV would choose that game - they always go for the big teams - so it will be Utd - West Ham and Sheffield Utd - Spurs.
We're not getting 500k from a game not on TV and an attendance of 11k at St Mary's.
£120k for winning last night £250k for being on ITV4 v Southampton (approx, was £247k last season for 5th round) Attendance v Blackpool in last round at Southampton was 20k. Maybe 25k 5th round. If average ticket price £20 then 45% of gate receipts would be £225k
Total = £595k. So £500k for winning last night (or upfront James Bree fee) seems reasonable estimate
That's football though. The same way if he had won last night with a full strength team everyone would have given Edwards pelters if we then lost on Saturday.
So I'm guessing that's what puts it up to £500,000.
Dunno how much we get for Millwall at home being televised on Sky but that will obviously help ease the loss of that cash. Won't cover it all. Probably won't cover half of it but it's there
But, I agree with the general point. Once you're in the C'ship FA Cup money is less important. Still would have been handy though
Don't disagree with Edwards' selection. The squad players need minutes and games too and if you can't do it for a game like last night when can you. The starting line up let him down. They should have been good enough to not be 3-0 down at half time against a bottom half L2 side. Very poor
Think the TV fee is the same regardless of what channel you're on. Advantages of being on BBC or ITV1 are, I presume, things like perimeter advertising rates are higher, so only home team would get the benefit.
The money from progressing would have been handy, but if our success or otherwise depends on progressing in the FA Cup, we’ve had it.
While I’m disappointed with tonight, we have a squad and you’ve got to give them their head at some point. Just didn’t work out.
Was there any chance of us winning the cup? not really.
The other danger is an away game at Southampton of all places, if Jones is there, becomes a circus and derails our league efforts. The important thing now is learn lessons, put it behind us and get back to doing what we’ve been doing.
