Interview

Whoever interviews Edwards tonight, I would like a straight question aimed at him, why did he start with team?

Because the financial rewards of the premier league dwarf that of the fa cup Because the FA stupidly have the 5th round midweek Because we have played / will play Saturday Tuesday for ages since busy Christmas Because we had a load of players cup tied or ineligible
You could only really say Thorpe was a risk. Start Doughty instead of him (a crucial player for us who is injury prone) and I don’t think anyone could have objected to the team selected.

Can we not achieve both then??

Concurred. The players selected should have had enough quality to get the job done. Ultimately, they proved they didn’t. A lot of them will be moved on in the summer.

Far too sensible and reasoned post on why we started with that team. As you say, the only real risk was playing Thorpe, other than that all the other changes were ones expected after Edwards interview yesterday.

Why go strong and try to win the first game then?
Re: Interview
Posted by Music Critic on 7/2/2023, 22:09:31, in reply to "Re: Interview"
Win the original game and get in R5 in case we drew out a plum tie. But we didn't win and didn't get a decent tie. Coupled with the fact the league position has become much stronger since the 1st game, priorities have leant even more to the league

More chance of picking up tv money and prize money than winning promotion. That money could be spent on needed players or wages to secure our best players.
Re: Interview
Posted by Music Critic on 7/2/2023, 22:17:06, in reply to "Re: Interview"
We're lying 4th in the League. I think we've got a good chance of promotion myself
We can attack the cups (or I would expect us to attack the cups) once we're in the top flight
People keep on about prize money and what have you but we'll have money from Sky for the Millwall game now. Won't make up the loss of Cup prize money but it's a consolation
Re: Interview
Posted by Sandgrounder on 7/2/2023, 22:43:49, in reply to "Re: Interview"
Not a chance we would ‘attack the cups’ if we were promoted to the premier league - the focus would be staying in it. Maybe once we’ve consolidated for several seasons and are the equivalent of Brighton now.
Re: Interview
Posted by Music Critic on 7/2/2023, 22:49:57, in reply to "Re: Interview"
Disagree
Might not be there for long so I reckon we'd go for it. Even if it's just attacking the FA Cup
No club has won the Cup from outside the top division since 1980 (longer than that for the League Cup I think) and the chances diminish further every year. So the only realistic chance is if you're at the top table. I'd be a bit disappointed if the club just threw that away*
*although, as you say, perhaps after we've survived a season or two (if we survive that long)
Re: Interview
Posted by Sandgrounder on 7/2/2023, 22:07:52, in reply to "Re: Interview"
Because if we’d won the first game we wouldn’t have had one today!

So one game makes all that difference. Rubbish.
Re: Interview

Because getting through tonight means £250k. Promotion means £150million

And what difference does that make,?
Sick of hearing that analogy.. so if we played our team from Saturday , they will be physically knackered? or one might pick up an injury? More important to me is that confidence will be down.
Would not be surprised now to see us get stuffed on Sat.
Re: Interview
Posted by Music Critic on 7/2/2023, 22:05:57, in reply to "Re: Interview"
It's not an analogy
Why would confidence be down when about 7 or even 8 of the players who start on Saturday didn't start tonight?
I'm fukked off about that bollocks tonight but, on the other hand, I can just imagine the whining if Burke or Doughty or Clark or whoever had started and then got injured. We'd all be saying 'why didn't he go weaker?'
To be honest as soon as the underwhelming draw was made I wasn't too worried about tonight. It's the manner of tonight's defeat that has pissed me off more than defeat itself

I would, tonight will have little impact on Saturday.

Exactly! How quickly people forget where we’ve been.
Feel bad for the souls who traveled all that way on a Tuesday February night. Bravo to them. But it’s hardly the end of the world and personally I think we could do without the Nathan Jones sideshow distraction when we’re trying to focus on league football.

I wonder if Man City fans keep harping on about where they have been and how shit they were.

Yes, some of them do
The recently acquired glory hunters don't, of course, but their proper support do

I'm sure the ones who remember them playing Macclesfield and York City do, though they're in an increasing minority these days. I suspect a lot of the followers with your attitude took a break during the Conference years, though you've got more chance of finding someone who'd admit to giving Gurney a chance than you have of locating these missing diehards.
And besides, it's not really the same, is it?

No ones forgotten our history, but do we need to be reminded of it after each defeat?

Because it wasn't a terrible line up. The difference is Horvath couldn't stop anything and Crocombe could.
