    In praise of...Grimsby Town

Posted by Floater on 7/2/2023, 15:56:46

Sensing that our team tonight won't be as strong as in the 2-2 match. It could be a long night if Grimsby get in our faces early spurred on by their vocal support. Our record there is moderate although we did win the Jordan Cook BrainFart Cup on our last visit.

If they do us, I can think of worse teams to lose to. Their recent journey has uncanny parallels with our own.

A reign of incompetence by madman John Fenty from the mid-2000s, replete with unpaid tax bills and mismanaged player contracts, saw Grimsby slide into non-league fooball. Fenty was ousted by fan mobilisation and a 2020-type takeover by long-time supporter and local entrepreneur, Jason Stockwood. Since then, they have built a sustainable foundation financially, with a civic eye on their responsibility to contribute to the fabric of a struggling post-industrial town. Remind you of anyone?

We have links with them through the Fair Game campaign group; as far as I know we're still the only Championship club who have bothered. In short, Luton and Grimsby run their club the right way. I wouldn't begrudge them the cash if they go on to face Southampton.

    That said, let's do this!

Who was the chairman Mike Newell supposedly had a fight with on their team bus?

Last time we played there in the cup we lost 7-1! Anyone on here go to that?

They defend very well from the front. Holohan and Clifton gave us problems in the first game.

Yes. I was there for that 7-1 mauling. We had a decent turnout that day. Lennie Lawrence's 2nd game in charge iirc. More impressively I was there for the glory Allen game in 98. I can even see myself going mental when he scores!

            Remember going with optimism!

Not sure LL was on the bench that day? I seem to remember hearing he hadn’t picked the team.(?) He has full control for next match. 2-2 home to Huddersfield (again bad memory?!)

Remember Patterson looked shell shocked coming off the pitch !

We went on a good run. We would have stayed up of Dwight Marshall had not broken leg.

Sounds like the same commentator who did the match when we won there 2-1 a few years back. Classic.

Spot on. Having met Jason Stockwood through work I can confirm he is a throughly decent bloke with a clear vision about supporting some of the more deprived communities of Grimsby as well as his involvement with the Mariners.
