    A thought on Joe Taylor

Posted by Nick NLPBH on 1/2/2023, 21:33:07

Peterborough fans seem delighted that they got a fee for him and are laughing. His goal record is certainly not great to put it mildly.

HOWEVER - our approach to signing players is quite heavily stat driven. And it was stated that he will need some work. The same I think was said or thought about Adebayo but he overdid expectations.

I don`t think he has been signed to make an impact this season Possibly not next either. But our transfer strategy is to look at POTENTIAL . Remember Carlton Morris didn`t have a stellar goalscoring record either. We seem to get it right more than wrong

all a bit Aaron Jarvis, all about perception really if we’d have signed Taylor in July and Woodrow last night it wouldn’t have ruffled as many feathers.

Also this mythical £600k won’t help, if only there was someway to alleviate that issue

Three reasons why clubs do undisclosed.

          1. To avoid other clubs using the wealth argument against us when/if they want to deal with us. And, no, not everything is known in football, as you will try and argue. Rumour is far from the truth - just look at how inaccurate transfermarkt is.

          2. To avoid placing undue pressure in the player, not just for him, but fans will use a heavy price tag against the player if he doesn't perform.

          3. Deals aren't simple enough. Most transfers attach huge proportions if the overall transaction on performance related bonuses / add-ons and will trade sell-ons too. I heard the JJ deal to Leicester contained over 60 conditional clauses which would have diluted the initial fee. So the £xxm headline can never be an applies for apples comparison.

And maybe a 4th, because of this complexity, Luton would never want that made public either because they wouldn't want other clubs to know how they negotiate.

On that basis, what value any supporter could possibly get from being nosy is diminished so much that it's just worthless.

Are you seriously suggesting Daniel Levy (for example) couldn’t ring up James Bree’s agent and find out what Southampton paid for him?

Re: A thought on Joe Taylor

Posted by TBF on 1/2/2023, 23:31:25, in reply to "Re: A thought on Joe Taylor"

              100%. Especially Levy!

And they certainly wouldn't find out the 60 odd clauses therefore, what's the point because you then don't know the real value anyway?

Most agents are pretty professional these days and are bound by the confidentiality clause in most contracts.

I notice you have a way of over simplifying a situation which is generally highly complex. No two deals can be compared unless you know all the clauses and can run macros in excel from an accurate crystal ball.

The days of the Don Revie dealings are long gone.

Swings and roundabouts. Jarvis was the archetypal 2 bags of footballs and a set of tracksuits. Morris - has we known how much we had spent on a bloke who scored 5 goals or whatever the season before there would have been meltdown. Guestimated figures tend to surface anyway. Look at it this way I can see why there is a blanket "undisclosed" policy. Albeit i would be curious as to the actual figures.

I think you unintentionally hit the nail on the head as to why everything is undisclosed. Making public the figures can put players under pressure

            Concur.

Unfair to judge someone before they've played. Also he has been brought in to develop. It is not like the recommendation has come from someone who knows nothing about the game. Mick (who played in the same position) has seen something. We just need to trust the process. Steve Howard had an appalling goal scoring record when he joined us. Primarily as he was played in midfield. Andre Gray and Issac Vassell were brought in on potential. They didn't turn out too badly.

From what I've read, Taylor has pace. Something you can't teach. You can teach positioning and finishing. Let's give the young lad some room to develop before crucifying him.

            Over and out....

Vassell was also on the back of my mind. He spent 6 months looking out of his depth but you could see potential (mind you i thought the same of alex wall). But then it clicked

Was Alex Wall the one who turned the Tesco down to play for Luton Town?
Agreed he showed promise but it never really happened.

No that was Aaron Jarvis, now at Torquay

Alex Wall was signed by Still late on in the season before we won the conference, scored a couple of crucial goals in title charge, had some sort of condition that halted his progress

His goalscoring record in Youth and U23 football is outstanding.

He hasn’t really had much chance in the Peterborough first team.
