    Why we are special

Posted by Billy Cooke on 1/2/2023, 15:40:39

What other championship clubs operate a policy of living within their means while still challenging for a play off place. The answer is probably none maybe with the exception of Millwall. All the other clubs rely on parachute payments or running up large debt

Millwall are spending big, losing money.

It would be interesting if football clubs issued simple financial statements each year for fans and anyone interested showing what money came in and from where and how it was spent, and who owns/ controls a club.

Genuinely most fans wouldn’t care , only reason we care is from hard experience. Let’s face it if we were spanking money we didn’t have and had never ever gone bust most Luton fans wouldn’t care.
Hard reality is that budget either overspending or not enough in comparison to peers will always catch up with a club if sustained over a long period of time.
2020 are doing the right thing imo but we need a new stadium or go up at some point just to keep up.

Millwall lost 12m last year and 13m the year before

But surely with parachute payments you're still living within your means

Makes no sense. You were in the bottom 3 of the Premier league and therefore relegated. As a consequence have 70 million pounds to try and get back at the expense of fair play in the division you are relegated into.

The parachute payments make sense from a Premier League perspective. They allow promoted teams to take relatively reasonable risks to achieve some level of competitiveness for example.

Thing is by protecting the EPL they distort the league below even more unfairly.

The real problem of course is that the money is not distributed far more equally in the first place.

I haven't really got an issue with it

I am not sure if that is true. I get the point we are forward thinking and astute but think we may have some generous benefactors

Yep and not sure how much debt Blackburn, Sunderland and Preston are running up - we are just obviously doing it on smaller gates and wages.

I am sure that we would take promotion and collect parachute payment if it happened.

Tenner says that's when the parachute payments stop.

                        Cheers, Jim

We would but that still doesn’t make it fair.

Parachute payments will probably stop the season we are relegated from the Premier League.
