Brexit and players.

Back in the day clubs used to be restricted to only having two overseas players in the starting 11 (something like that ) . When it was changed it was apparently to do with the freedom of movement for work…obviously that no longer applies.
Even in the Championship lots of teams have @ 80% non British players and the Premiership teams even more. The argument was that our young talent would learn from imports but I am not sure sitting on the bench and not playing helps you develop. I watch a lot of golf and I am not getting any better..😂😂
Personally would love to see us go back to say a max of 5 overseas players in the starting line up if only to #### up that mob down the road.😂😂
Presumable since Brexit the UK could choose to overturn the 'Bosman' ruling. That would certainly help clubs like ours. We are a victim of players understandably running down their contracts and then moving on a free. If we overturn the Bosman we could retain their registration and charge a new club to compensate us.
Union Royale Belge des Sociétés de Football Association ASBL v Jean-Marc Bosman (1995) C-415/93 (known as the Bosman ruling)[1] is a 1995 European Court of Justice decision concerning freedom of movement for workers, freedom of association, and direct effect of article 39[2] (now article 45 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union) of the TEC. The case was an important decision on the free movement of labour and had a profound effect on the transfers of footballers—and by extension players of other professional sports—within the European Union (EU).
The decision banned restrictions on foreign EU players within national leagues and allowed players in the EU to move to another club at the end of a contract without a transfer fee being paid.
We may then be excluded from UEFA of course - but thats a different discussion.
The Bosman ruling was made by the EU courts and football was very much dragged to reform. That said, UEFA probably wouldn't allow teams in their competitions that would allow UK teams to compete unfairly by stealing EU players for free and then demanding fees to release them.

Overseas players should be restricted. It won't happen though, Sky and BT won't give up their PL cash cow.

I faintly remember some news item after the referendum where BJ said the Premier League wouldn't be affected by any immigration laws. I'll google it in a bit.
Any restrictions on free movement for footballers more than the current ones will be met by SkySports rent-a-gobs saying it will stop the PL being the best in the world.

I think it's more complex than that as regards to young players development.
Scotland and Ireland used to produce many world class players but that's dried up.
I think it is a combination of the ugly sisters going for third rate (what they can afford) foreign players and therefore not buying off the rest. The rest used to bring them through and sell and then complain it wasn't fair, but continued with the cycle. Now even they get fifth rate foreign players, rather than go the youth route. Will be interesting to see how the young Hibs player (Porteous) (spelling?) gets on at Vicarage Road
Agree with you both obviously the sky wankfest wouldn’t allow it but whilst we have a decent England team I think a lot of half decent youngsters don’t get a chance . I guess it’s no different to any job , players come here because they get paid more . It’s pretty ironic the big Spanish & Italian clubs whinging about the Premiershite when they paid the most for long periods…mainly in brown envelopes in Italy.
