Jerome and Cornick... again
Posted by Elmo on 27/1/2023, 11:46:18
Can understand why they would want to leave in search for regular football. I'll be sad to see either go as both have been fantastic squad players.
The utter carnage Jerome caused when he came on in the QPR home game will live long in the memory.
Are we leaving ourselves short in this area or do we envisage a replacement/s coming in this window?
Agree with that Elmo. Buying and selling I'd by far the most important thing for a manager to succeed at. Tactics and training are relatively standard these days. Squad quality and balance, and motivation/ team morale are vital.
At end of the day, we need 4 strikers. At lresent, we have 5, Jerome and Cornick will go but we will bring someone in to replace 1 of them.
The club has to keep evolving. Its quite possible we can still come out this window better than when we entered. The club already feels it has done that with the bree situation.
We might get away with lack of specialist central defender cover IF we don't get injuries. And we MIGHT get away with stand in Central defenders from other positions but I would think RE would like another one in if possible. Nobody wants to jeopardise our play off chances.
We’ve effectively lost 3 centre backs since last season (Naismith, Kioso, Bree) and signed none. Bradley out long term too. Burke injury prone. We definitely need at least one CB, ideally 2.
I would say we would need an extra right back as well. We have sold both Kioso and Bree and replaced them with a 21 year old kid, who has played no more than 26 first team games in his whole career and has played 1 competitive game in the last 8 to 9 months. Dont get me wrong he looks an outstanding talent and i would be delighted if we had signed him on loan in the summer but throwing him now into a championship promotion push as our sole specialist right back is a big ask.
Buying and selling is probably an area in which the manager has the least involvement in the modern era. There’s a whole recruitment team that are entrusted with those decisions.
The manager is one cog in the wheel and not the most important part of transfers.
There a lot in that in terms of finding possible signings and setting financial limits as u say ND. The final say usually goes with the manager who also is imusually the key person in persuading a player to join the club . That was one of NJs great skills.
