    Kirkby Hatter

Somebody mentioned in a earlier thread blaming 20/20 not tying him down to a new contract, obviously he was offered a new one but as with Naismith decided to run it down and move on a free and probably treble his wages elsewhere. Yes would probably have stayed until the summer and then moved to another championship club but with Jones going to Southampton was always going to leave in January, £500k is peanuts for a player of his quality but worth the gamble for Southampton. More players doing this nowadays, no loyalty to any club, but money is always the most important factor in a player’s career.

As I’ve posted before, this is not a surprise. The only way Bree was staying with us at the end of his contract was a) we were in the premier league or b) he’d done so badly no-one else wanted him (which wouldn’t have been a great outcome for us). He left Villa to come here because they made up his shortfall in wages for the first 2 years of his time with us (the difference between what we were paying him and the last 2 years of his Villa contract). He came here to put himself in the shop window, one step back to go forwards. He was never going to sign again with us for £6k per week or whatever our top wage is now. We’ve done well out of him and he’s done well out of us, let’s wish him well, move on and support the decisions 2020 make.

        Solid post.

To be honest if I was a young footballer at a Prem club it's the kind of deal I'd want to make

Nothing new nowadays I’m afraid. Until he signed his new deal and probably his last at this level Bradley has always run down his contract collecting a signing on fee on the way.

Yep. It's the way of the world, and we will have known this was coming (not necessarily to Southampton, that sticks in the craw a bit but not at all unexpected) and have some sort of plan in place.

Personally, I'm a fan of Bree. He's made loads of goalscoring chances this season and works particularly well with Burke. Not at all convinced he's up to top level PL standards but the only player we have/had in the current team who I saw as having sufficient potential for it. Good luck to him, he's done well for us and put up with some crap too from the fans.

This probably isn't a great move for him though as he's unlikely to be taking set pieces or even be first choice, and it's getting towards odds on they'll be in the Championship next season.

Onwards and upwards for us though, interesting to see what we have lined up for this scenario.

Agreed until you got to "probably isn't a great move for him though as he's unlikely to be taking set pieces or even be first choice".

If "odds on they'll be in the Championship next season " he's likely to become first choice on both counts, while even if they stay up Ward-Prowse must be ready to move up to CL level, especially after missing out on WC place.

I'm wondering if they are odds-on to go down.

They were bang out of luck against Villa apparently and I saw quite a bit of the cup semi-final against Newcastle. Again, I think they were unlucky with VAR, Newcastle probably still deserved to win but they gave them a game and the Geordies are flying at the moment.

It's all fine margins but with a bit of luck / a couple of good signings I wouldn't rule them out of turning it around.

They are but it is very close at the bottom of the table - they are one win away from being level on points with Leicester who are 14th so it is by no means a certainty.

                Bournemouth 1/3
                Everton 8/11
                Southampton 10/13

They are at the bookies of course but I was thinking of real-world chances. Maybe they still are but I certainly wouldn't give up on them just yet.

Might be a case of not appreciating a player until he leaves for many. Good luck to him. Done well for us despite the stick. He's going to have some job convincing their fans for sure.

Sky reporting £500K, rising to £750 with add-ons, probably if they stay up… so 500K it is.

Villa get a sell on fee so some of that will go to them. Probably £150-£200k

It is and whilst KH is right 750k is peanuts for Saints it isn't for us. That's over 10% of what we get annually for being in the Championship. If we'd refused to release him then we'd have an irritated player and a message to any other decent player to steer clear of LTFC if you want to progress. This is not a bad deal it's just not what we would've wanted.

Bree may well end up in the championship next season.
Glad we don't have to hear that shit song anymore.
But good luck to him, he done well for us.
