The NHS is in a total mess. It's never changed how it operates from first inception to how it needs to work now. That is the fault of every government for the last 30 years+

It needs a complete overhaul from top to bottom, more money won't solve anything. The issue is to fix it will take many years because of the size of the beast. This work will take much longer than one term of government though so no one will take it on and work to fix it as politics is now so short sighted and goes for quick wins that never actually fix the problems (thanks Trump as the first true 'populist' politician to gain power)

Ideally the NHS needs 'removing' from government control but still be publicly funded so it can no longer become a political play thing and adapt to how it needs to work without the bullshit politics interfering

Just my opinion, probably wrong though

Uncomfortable truth which doesn't help the NHS, there's a proportion of people in this country who are too thick to look after themselves ,so they clog up Drs surgeries when they've basically just got a cold and should stay in bed. and another section who are morbidly obese and eat and drink to excess and think the NHS can just cure their ailments.

I don't think you'd find many in the NHS thinking it hadn't changed. It's gradually been privatised over the years and wastes inordinate amounts of money on underperforming contractors who often haven't been effectively vetted.

I do agree with the spirit of your suggestion though.

Absolutely things have changed within it but it's core hasn't adapted to what is needed now.

I also think the public have a lot of blame to take as well, as there are people out there who use ambulances as a glorified uber, use a+e for things that they really don't need etc. It's not the majority that do it but enough for it to cause problems.

I'd like to think the proportion of the public that does that is low but . . .

Some services near me used to actually pretty good, eg a lot of the routine tests with really quick turnarounds but then they shifted it to our GP's surgery who do nothing but complain they are over-worked and it's got quite patchy.

As for dentistry, the last local NHS dental practice accepting new NHS patients was taken over by BUPA. Two years later they are telling existing patients they have no dentists so we will need to seek "alternative arrangements". No prizes for guessing where more than half of the dentists that had worked there moved on to!

NHS is in a mess. Needs a total review as just bunging more money at it is not necessarily the right thing to do. See where cost efficiencies can be made and if the review shows you need X new beds, doctors and nurses etc then bloody get them. In the meantime, what exactly is wrong with paying to see a doctor IF it is done on a similar basis as eligibility for free prescriptions?

Because it's queue jumping for the wealthy whilst everyone else gets pushed further down the queue. It's almost certain that the GP he is seeing isn't 100% private in other words he could be spending more time on NHS patients. And even if he was exclusively private it's a sad indictment of the way the NHS operates that he/she feels the need to work under that regime.

I think you've missed the point. His suggestion is that those who have a more serious medical condition would be exempt from paying.

The NHS does needs a complete review and reform / a restructure is definitely required. I've seen it for myself quite frequently recently (unfortunately due to my current health / circumstances) there are a fair few people who are taking up GP & hospital appointments when a simple call to 111 would suffice.

No waste in the front line. But from my observation when I last accompanied Mrs P to see her consultant ...

How many NHS workers does it take to change a lavatory seat (that only needed tightening)?

                      answer - SEVEN

                      1 receptionist to report fault
2 men with clipboards to investigate fault
2 superfluous older nurses who had to interrupt their chat to show men where the lavatory with seat problem was, despite it being signposted. And then talk men into allowing a replacement rather than a fix.
1 man to requisition new seat from stores
1 man to collect from stores and fit

The actual consultant saw her on time and was very attentive.
