Owen was then on the bench as England beat the hosts 2-0 to top their group, as he remained unused when the Three Lions went out in the quarter-finals, beaten 4-2 by Uruguay in Basel.

Substitutes weren't used at World Cups until 1970.

AFC Portchester striker Harrison Brook is on the radar of Luton Town according to his manager Dave Carter.

The 19-year-old was once with League One side Portsmouth, playing in the Papa Johnís Trophy tie against West Ham United U21s in November 2000, coming on as a 67th minute substitute in the 1-0 defeat.

He played for them before he was born ?

Strange - the article you linked to refers to the qualifying stages rather than the group stages - I actually saw that article when I was checking before posting.

That Switzerland game was played in surely the most wonderfully named stadium in the world (just beating Livingston's Tony Macaroni Stadium - aka The Spaghettihad).

            I was just being devilish!

I think your original poat is factually correct.

I'm guessing here, so I may be wrong, but I think substitutes were only used in the qualifying stages (as you and the original article said)

I am assuming the substitutions referred to on the FIFA website are just unused members of the 22 man squad so they were not actually substitutes and so couldn't be used as such.

I suspect the Luton News took the list of 'substitutions' from the FIFA website and assumed they were actual substitutes.

I have no idea why FIFA calls them 'substitutions' rather than unused squad members.

Unfortunately the Luton News is a shadow of its former self, first of all taken over by Trinity Mirror, then merged with the Dunstable Gazette (and Dunstable residents are fortunate if there's more than two news stories about Dunstable), and full of franchised crap.
