Fifa president Gianni Infantino has accused the West of "hypocrisy" in its reporting about Qatar's human rights record on the eve of the World Cup.

In an extraordinary monologue at a news conference in Doha, Infantino spoke for nearly an hour and made a passionate defence of Qatar and the tournament.

The event has been overshadowed by issues in Qatar including deaths of migrant workers and treatment of LGBT people.

Infantino opened by saying: "Today I have strong feelings. Today I feel Qatari, I feel Arab, I feel African, I feel gay, I feel disabled, I feel a migrant worker."

Hosts Qatar kick off the tournament against Ecuador at Al Bayt Stadium on Sunday (16:00 GMT).

In February 2021, the Guardian said 6,500 migrant workers from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka had died in Qatar since it won its World Cup bid.

The number is based on figures provided by the countries' embassies in Qatar.

However, the Qatar government said the total was misleading, because not all the deaths recorded were of people working on World Cup-related projects.

Infantino said: "I am European. For what we have been doing for 3,000 years around the world, we should be apologising for the next 3,000 years before giving moral lessons.Europe really care about the destiny of these people, they can create legal channels - like Qatar did - where a number of these workers can come to Europe to work. Give them some future, some hope.

"I have difficulties understanding the criticism. We have to invest in helping these people, in education and to give them a better future and more hope. We should all educate ourselves, many things are not perfect but reform and change takes time.

"This one-sided moral lesson is just hypocrisy. I wonder why no-one recognises the progress made here since 2016.

"It is not easy to take the critics of a decision that was made 12 years ago. Qatar is ready, it will be the best World Cup ever.

"I don't have to defend Qatar, they can defend themselves. I defend football."
The west should be apologising ! For 3,000 years! Did the Egyptian not use slaves to build the pyramids? Have the Arabs apologised? 3000 years later and no gay people in Qatar! Apology if I'm wrong. Fifa is corruption. They are the ones who should be apologising. They arexthe ones that should be paying compensation to the families of those migrants that have died building this absurd stadiums in blistering heat. Fifa you are a disgrace.

I would dismiss the crapness of Qatar but his point is generally true. All this crap about the world cup.must be in European summer months and the denial that places like the City.of London are clearing houses for dirty money and the exploitation of workers everywhere is nauseous

Why is football different?

They use slave labour for everything not just to build footy stadiums.

we either care or we don't care,picking and choosing when to care does not wash with me.

Our government are happy to provide jets to Quatar for billions and 5% of London property is owned by the rulers of this place.

Our political class believe this is normal and folk seem to like it or accept it.

oh mate - i totally agree. theyll all be munching on their mcdonalds (world cup sponsors), wearing their tatty primark jumpers (made in sweat shops) and turning a blind eye to the 5000 british kids who were subjected to slavery last year - BUT the issues in qatar are THAT important to them.

Surely one can oppose both? Your apparent argument of “X is bad, therefore we must also accept Y” doesn’t work. For what it’s worth, I have long refused to buy anything from Primark for exactly the reason you said.

Surely it is more hypocritical to stand up for things such as human rights in this country, while simultaneously throwing up your hands and saying “#### it” over dead migrant labourers and the entrapment, gang-rape and deportation of LGBT people by Qatar.

I feel that many people are targeting their anger at Qatar, when it should be aimed at Fifa.
Yes Qatars human rights are effing terrible but we all knew that.
Fifa should be slaughtered and all those in current positions of power should be hounded out.
Football belongs to the people and they are destroying it.
Boycotting it by not watching the tv just hurt the individuales, there should be a worldwide collaboration of fans who could display flags slagging Fifa and demanda g change.
I don't do social media, (other than this site),but if there is anyone out there who feels strongly enough about it maybe they could get the ball rolling by talking to
Local Luton who could then ask other clubs to display flags on a given date.
Just an idea.

one thing which is hypocritical is the criticism of Qatar about gays rights just because we're playing football there.

You cannot be openly gay in ANY muslim country if you value your life.

So surely that's important all the time not just when we want to kick a ball around there.

It's only the freaks, nonces and croc/Lonsdale wearers that give the abuse on here whilst using various names. There's a reason why they do that. I actually feel a tad sorry for some of them.
I've met dozens of lads over the years that post on here. They're the ones that tend to stick to the 1 posting name as they're not cowards. I can honestly say, every single one of them have been decent company over a pint or 2.

Infantino was born in Switzerland to Italian parents. His wife is Lebanese, and footballl mad apparently. She possibly has influenced his views. Interestingly he is a sports legislation lawyer by training. He is fluent in 6 languages, has his law degree, and is football mad so he looks well qualified for the job . I don’t think the job gives him the right to express his personal views the way he did, agreeing with him or not.

BBC news this morning. Qatar defending themselve by stating that , of the 6500 migrant workers that have died in the last 5 years, not all of them died building the stadiums.
