New Manager loanee recall
Posted by AlphaHatter on 13/11/2022, 13:59:11
I’d like to think everybody will start off with a clean slate with the new boss whoever he may be.
I’d go one stage further and recall the numerous loanees so he can have a look at them for a fortnight whilst the WC is on. CMG for one might be a shoe in under new leadership and a different system.
I’m not suggesting we terminate the loan deals before January.
I’m inferring we bring them back for a few weeks of training so he can have a good look at them. They can go back to their loan club on match days. I’d include McAtee in that.
I would expect that whoever they are will recall every loanee back just to see who would make the squad a little stronger and GS has said that he is open to making additions to help the manager as much as he can. So could be looking at better performances towards the end if the season but looking forward to a strong season next year.
I don't see how we can play a different system without signing at least one centre-half. I'm not sure any of our current ones suit playing in a two. Also, chances are, any new manager is likely to pick EA and Morris up top as much as they can.
Think Burke and Lockyer can. But both have been a hit injury prone.
CMG was a bit of a weird signing. I’m guessing he was bought to play wide in a front three. But we changed to two up front pretty soon after we bought him.
Boring tactics chat, but I always liked 4231 but it seems to have gone out of fashion a bit over the last few years.
I have always liked 4231 as well, it give the front four licence to attack with the knowledge that the two lying deep can cover. It also allows the fullbacks to bomb forward. But we have two big Centre forwards who cause problems for the opposition so we will probably carry on with 2 up top.
As a manager you can either buy players to fit the formation you want to play, or play a formation to suit what you have, which we have been doing.
What am I missing as that makes no logical sense to me.
We currently play with 3 centre halves and 2 wing backs. A different system could well mean going to a back 4 with just 2 centre halves thus taking the pressure off the need for additional centre halves. As for our current ones not suited to playing in just a two, surely that's only because they've seldom done so with us.
We play three because we need to play three, we couldn't get away with just two. No two are dominant enough. Maybe Burke or Lockyer and another but definitely not Potts and probably not Bradley just at the moment. Don't know if the latter is a permanent thing.
I think we could do it with Burke and Lockyer together as a pair, but there is a definite lack of other options if either/both are unavailable.
I think it also depends upon how you look at it. If our centre backs aren't good enough, do we play three of them to compensate? Or play an extra midfielder (or even 2, if we switched to 1 up front) in order to give them more protection so they aren't exposed?
I used to be a huge advocate of 3 centre halves but I'm starting to change my thinking into packing the midfield more and stopping crosses into the box from source.
