What is the obsession with Watford? Other teams are available.
Put another way, if geography had Luton in Devon, then Watford would be just another club and any one of the three Devon teams would be "the bad guys".
Sport is entertaining, but sometimes, it just makes fools of us.

              Its one way, Nate.

Watford fans find Luton a bit irrelevant really, nowadays. It stopped being an 'obsession' 25 years ago ..... as we've hardly ever played you lot in that time, such was your downward spiral. Its turned more to mild amusement of a club that flogged its awful ground to the local council, whose fans are more Dingwall than Millwall & spent years trying to get out of the National Pub League. Our hate for you has just turned to laughter, especially the unbridled envy of our deserved promotions to the EPL (x3). A destination LTFC have never even got close to. So, keep up the good work scummers - nonentities make such a good comedy source!

Of course. But most football fans (apart from the glory teams) are fans of a team because of where they grow up. If you/I grew up in Newcastle, we would not choose (out of the blue) to support Luton. We would almost certainly support the Toon and Sunderland would be the boogeyman. I get the nearest rival routine. What I have never understood is the obsession to a particular fixture above others. No point getting three points against a neighbouring team, if two other teams are in promotion places and maybe going to run away with it. "They" should be the obsession until overtaken.

Well, to me it didn't at least.

You can't say "I get the nearest rival routine."

You can't say it on it's own because there's nothing "routine" about it.

And you certainly can't say it and then follow it up by saying you don't understand why it's viewed as more important than other fixtures. That shows you don't get it at all.

I am probably not articulate enough to convince you. It was interesting to see the Sunday poll below. The majority of people on here would not trade twelve points, for three against Watford. So some may agree with me and maybe be able to put it across in a more logical way.

It's always been something special, my first experience of it was Boxing Day 1979. It's one of my abiding memories, standing in the opposite end watching about 5k Hatters go utterly mad when Basher nodded in that 93rd minute winner.

If you don't get it, or rather don't prioritise it the same then obviously that's fine. But, my experience is very different. I think it meant even more back in the day.

You are right about the word "prioritise". I knew someone would be more articulate.
