    Offside confusion

Posted by Balarmory on 1/10/2022, 10:38:51

Last night the commentators on Sky in lead up to HLís worldy were saying EA was offside, but I thought he was on as there were two Hull players level or nearer the goal, their keeper and one on the floor who had part of his arm & shoulder & head on the pitch and the rest behind the line; are you not on the pitch unless youíre feet are?
Am I an old fart thatís not up date with UEFA/FIFA constant fiddling of rules, or have I always been wrong?

Clearly offside but it's not often we get a big decision go our way.

          Definitely in an offside position.

So I am clear it is because his feet are over the goal line so that means he is not on the field so only one player between Elijah and the goal?

There has to be two players between the player and the goal line when the ball is played forward. Adebayo's foot was goal side of the keeper so even if the Hull player was considered in play he is offside.

The Hull player would have counted but as you say that's immaterial given there was no other goalside of him.

No. EA was behind the keeper so one man only was between him and the goal.

You cannot step off of the field to make someone offside.

Agreed, the defender in the goal itself would have counted as one player keeping him onside but he was behind the keeper so offside.

Because you are standing in an offside position doesn't necessarily make you offside. When the shot came in EA made no attempt to play the ball, he also was wide of the keeper so didn't impede him. So no offside at that point.
Where he might be offside is where he comes from an offside position and plays a pass, it's open to opinion if that is deemed the same phase of play, in my opinion it is the same phase of play so he should be now flagged offside, not when the original shot comes in.
In the old days it was clear, now offside can be a minefield.

Spot on. I dont think EA impedes the keeper in any way therefore the goal was awarded correctly.

Only got involved after the keeper had touched it so that made him onside.
Not interfering before that because momentum moved him into that position and he was moving back to get onside.
Very vague rule open to interpretation.

                        Good point!

It's one area where you have to cut the officials some slack.

                          Good observation.

As you say, the rules are grey for certain situations. Really difficult for referees.

                            I think that's correct.
