      I've paid off both of my mortgages so couldn't care less. And I can raise the rent on my rental property if mortgage payments are going up. Happy days. Unfortunately for me, I've got 3 kids and the only way they are getting on the housing ladder anytime soon is if I give them a lump of cash as a deposit. This country has well & truly gone to the dogs.

            The problem with this Fred is as follows. For 33 years Thatcher, the Tories that followed her, & Blair, have all preached neo-liberalism, cheap credit, have what you want when you want it. You can't expect people to eat bread & lard & live by candlelight anymore.

              The problem is SM is that people want things when they want them, thing which in most cases they want but don't need and therein lies the problem. If you spend your money on things you don't need but want, especially if you do so on credit, and then find that you can't afford the credit bills, then it's your own damn fault; nobody else's fault, yours alone.

              Then, if you can only afford to eat bread and lard and lighting by candles, sobeit,, the decision is yours. As the saying goes, you make your bed etc......

                What if what they want is food to feed themselves and their kids and they can't afford to because of low pay, erratic hours, illness, disability, etc.?

                  Yes, I know those you refer to, those who can't afford to feed their children because they have to buy their cigarettes, have their nails varnished and pay for the most fashionable tattoos to cover their bodies from head to toe, pay for their 59" flat TV and sky dish on the outside wall not to mention the daily visit to the bookies.

                  Yes, I know them, many of them, and after all the above they expect the rest of us to pick up the bill for their total lack of respect of those who do work hard and live within their means and when times are hard they cut their cloth accordingly.

                  That's why they claim to be unable to feed their children, many of whom are fathered by countless different men, I know them and so do you.

                    You don't know what's going to happen in the future, like developing a chronic degenerative or fatal disease, or or sustaining injuries in an accident, after you've had kids.
