    If you won Euro Millions

Posted by Crème Brûlée on 13/10/2021, 11:44:45

That's £184m. Where do you put that? I mean to minimise any chance of it being lost/hacked/stolen etc. High street banks are only guaranteed up to £83k aren't they?

This is a problem I hope to encounter in a couple of days time.

I always said with money like that, I would give? money to build simple family homes in places like Cornwall and rent them out at peppercorn rents to fishermen and families , to keep traditions alive.
Equally reopen closed pubs in sterile communities in villages that have no facilities.

      After sorting family out etc…

The football club ,,, mmm I don’t know footy is a fickle business….

        It would just about cover

I would leave legacies bat both my favourite rugby club and my favourite football club for a starter.

We often discuss this at work and I always find it funny that my work colleagues assume I would give them a million each.....

Hilarious as many of them are annoying as ####.

You can spread across several high street banks but usually money of that amount usual goes into a different type of bank not your Barclays and Santander that us commoners use.

I think you'd want to shift a lot of it into assets as you don't want all that cash. I think I'd buy about 50 rental @ 1M each properties . Some in the UK some in France/Spain/Italy etc and create a holiday rental business. The business will make money but even if it didn't you have 50 potentially appreciating assets there that won't disappear. I'd stick £25M in Govt bonds. £25M in gold. £50M would go into a charity fund aimed at helping those in need which I would run . I wouldn't run the holiday business couldn't imagine anything worse. The remaining £34M will get me on the LTFC board for which I will require zero returns but would appreciate a stand being named after me. The 'mmmm' stand has a ring to it.

You spread a bit around the high street, 10 or so banks, that's your safety net. You invest a #### load in safe assets such as bonds, real estate etc. You then put a few million in to more fun investments, might make a billion, might lose it all sort of ventures.
The rest you do with as you please? Fast cars, football club, Conservative party etc.

Give most of it away to family, friends, those you know in need, charities, etc.

Despite the odd blip real estate is probably about the best guarantee long term to offer a very good return.

For example, when my grandma died in 1984 my dad and my uncle reluctantly sold the 3 bed semi-detached on Pomfret Avenue for £35k. Just 5 years later it sold for double that. Now it's worth circa £300k.

Also, how do they make sure the winner isn't a total nutjob? That's a lot of money to hand over to a wrong un.

Remember the "Lotto Lout?"* He won several million, and I think was unemployed or on very low pay, bought a mansion, lived the high life for a few years, until the money was all gone and he had to sell the mansion because he couldn't afford the upkeep.

The one from Norfolk? He's became a binman after blowing his money. Madness, £10m he won. Read something a little while ago that about £1m was invested I think, but still, what stupidity!

I worked with Littlewoods Pools extensively on their marketing many moons ago...they were desperate for someone normal to hit the jackpot, but most winners seemed to be complete crackpots. Their looks (not that that should matter) also tended to be a nightmare for the PR bods. Older readers might remember the 'coconut head' bus side posters....

Chuckles. But seriously, they must have something in place to prevent handing that amount of money over to a potential terrorist or similar?

                                  I imagine so.

Littlewoods were very thorough on the winners welfare front too, though that didn't always work too well.

It was all quite amusing seeing the PR people try to get a good story out of it. I remember one big winner being asked what he would do with the money and he said the only thing he was going to buy was a new fridge. He was amazingly miserable about it all!
