    Bored in Flitwick scaremongering watch

    Today*....you will be disappointed.

BBC website - absolutely no doom and gloom, no shortage stories but second top story is headed 'UK economy boosted by holidays and dining out', so all positive (and good news)

Mail online - some silly nosey neighbours story heads it up, replacing what was top earlier: 'more energy firms to go bust, meaning higher energy bills'...scroll down a bit and the BIG feature (headline in block caps) is BRITAIN'S OMNI-SHORTAGE CRISIS.

So who's scaremongering, then? Looks like your favourite comic is, not the BBC.

*that's the real today, not the yesterday today you seem to operate to.

Apologies for facetiousness, but it's the sort of response your inaccurate nonsense deserves.

Oh, and by the way, BBC Breakfast this morning, what AWFUL product placement. All that stuff about Children In Need, I'm sure you'll be up in arms about it when you watch it live tomorrow...

When I looked at google this morning the first headline that jumped out at me was one from the Express stating UK interest rates set to rise five fold.

As a saver I got quite excited by then but then I remembered the current rate is 0.1%

I watched just a minute or two, I don't have TV on much and was setting a few BBC4 programmes to record. I get on with work in the mornings.

BBC4 is a marvellous resource, I would happily pay the licence fee for that alone.

Anyhow, my main point - as surely even you must have noticed - is about the websites.

So you have a Peleton? Fell for that advertising campaign didn't you! You could get that exercise in a local park, running, walking or cycling - even during lockdown. I certainly did, and continue to do so.

Would have saved you a small fortune as you're keen on not paying for things..

Tend to agree with that. A very handy help to fitness if you're on the International Space Station or perhaps resident in the Antarctic. Council owned leisure centres with their multitude of sports and first rate facilities, are an absolute bargain.

They are indeed, a shame that cuts by central government have led to so many being closed down or privatised and charged for. I'm lucky enough to have a smallish park very close to home. 15 laps = 10k, perfect, did it every day during lockdown and similar since. (Not running, though. Speed walking, as advised by Michael Moseley, on one of his wonderful BBC programmes about fitness and healthy living. Just think of the money Bored in Flitwick might have saved if he watched it!)

I am now fitter and healthier than I've been for many a year. Good old BBC....

Just imagine how late I would be if I DIDN'T walk quickly!

Reformed character this season though. I don't always go straight to my seat, but haven't been late to the ground...that was just habit and having little time for a prematch beer having had a long journey down. Match days are a fine balance.

Bit odd that anyone would have an interest in when I arrive, but hey ho!

No! Somewhat ridiculously, although I was at the ground well on time, I was chatting to Norm at his stall, catching up...hadn't seen him for a while.

That day is a good example of the travel/balance/social/football I've happily settled into though. Work in the morning, walk into Manchester (a few miles), train to MK, picked up by friends, food at their place, beers at the wonderful Beerfly in Bedford, train to Luton, Brickies, match, quick beer and overnight at friends. In the context of balance and a busy day, missing a few minutes of the football doesn't make much of a difference and I only disrupt 3 people to get to my seat. Personally, I am mystified by those who leave early, but each to their own.

That goal was odd though. Both Norm and I thought it must have been for Coventry as the pen award, and being scored (didn't know it was a pen of course) seemed to be greeted by muted and distant cheers.

The game was brilliant, wasn't it.

It was an excellent performance, our best performance for many a year considering our current level.

Agree about leaving early, what's the point? Unless it's unavoidable due to transport issues.

Oxford at home in the Conference, and Wycombe away a few years back spring readily to mind.

To be fair. Gym I go to is 16 quid a month and is open 24/7. don't think that's bad , I prefer to run outside but as winter descends and the light goes it's not always as easy to fit the time in so the gym comes in handy.

Just over 50p a day is a bargain mate, well found!!

I don't really like gyms, to be honest. I prefer to be out in the open air whatever the weather, but I have the luxury of being self-employed and thus, within reason, being able to exercise when I want. It's a real advantage, as is having a park so close.

I'm hoping to get back into running. I knackered my knees many years ago training for a marathon without proper running shoes (they weren't as easy to get back then) on streets. But with decent shoes and having losing a lot of weight, there's a lot less impact on the knees to worry about...I sometimes dream about that sense of freedom that comes from distance running at a decent pace!

You obviously watch the BBC, including programmes you don't like such as BBC Breakfast and Graham Norton.

Some of us have better things to do with our mornings and Friday evenings, but don't begrudge others being able to watch them.
Do you listen to 3cr commentary of matches you don't attend?

Because that's the only radio station they'll be on.

You're just whingeing for the sake of it, aren't you?

None of us only pay for 'things we want' - we also have shared responsibilities, that's a basic of any decent society.

                                          Sorry, no.

But a quick google search suggests that book would make very interesting reading. As I always tell people, if Christianity didn't make any sense or have any impact in real-world life and experience then I'd pack it in immediately as it would be totally pointless. I'm intrigued as to what he has to say and what angle he's coming at it from.

Have a look if you get a chance. I think you would LOVE what he says in the opening chapter, for instance, and how he says it.

You can get it for a few quid online from World Of Books: I use them quite a lot as an alternative to big bad Amazon. Though independent bookshops are the way ahead of course!

I work in the Care sector and can confidently say that the care staff shortages is the worst I have seen in twenty five years.

I would expect that the BBC would highlight this.

Pathetic, the plan for Christmas story actually says 'I can say completely, categorically that supply chain will not fail and that goods will be on the shelves through Christmas', you plonker!

The care staff shortage is a genuine news piece, perhaps you should read beyond the headlines?

Just think - if some young people see on the news there is a care staff shortage and decide they want to become a career, it might actually be a POSITIVE THING.

Not really an appealing career though is it with low wages, poor conditions. The Care system has been under regulated for years, too many Care homes run for poor profit by people that do not have the necessary nursing background and run it like a business at the detriment of their staffs welfare..

The care sector is pretty heavily regulated. However, I agree with your point about profits, many are of the main care providers are owned by Private Equity and sold on every four or five years for huge financial gain.

That was what I meant, too many unscrupulous owners who have no idea of the needs of the people they care for or what the staff require to support them.

The vast majority of people that work in care are exceptional people that are let down by people seeking financial gain.

All down to taking away the onus to provide care from councils (not that I'm saying they were all wonderful), and letting the private sector run riot.

Also flogging off the convalescent homes where people who were no longer in need of hospital treatment but needed more care than could be provided by untrained family members could go to recuperate from operations etc.

Totally, bit like driving a lorry, but if they can't attract carers then they willl have to offer better pay for starters.
