    England game

Typical team performance from a team managed by a defender. Take of your only effective attacker at 70 odd minutes and play for a draw. Zero threat when Grealish substituted and less than zero threat taking Stirling off.

Awful, felt like we went back 30 years tonight. Teams are attacking our left hand side, they obviously think Luke Shaw is our weakest link. Southgate takes Grealish off and pushes Shaw forward, as for Kane..

Don't think he's involved any more. It was just the euros I think.

England had similar problems in the summer breaking down well-organised defensive teams like Scotland and Czech Rep.
Nothing new. I hope at some point the team clicks and suddenly they are passing through packed defences a la Barcelona from 10 years ago.

Hungary were hardly sitting back - they had plenty of the ball in England's half in the second half , helped in part by sloppy England play at the back.

If the problem was breaking down a stubborn defence, taking Grealish off is inexplicable.

As it was Southgate explained it as needing to change shape. It was true that Hungary started the second half better than they finished the first, but I'm not sure what shape Southgate was aiming for in bringing Saka on. Whatever it was it wasn't very coherent. The more pressing need was to solidify the deeper central midfield, mainly to deny Hungary the ball and to provide a better springboard for attack.

That meant getting Henderson on earlier. However when he did come on it didn't really improve significantly. By then it hadn't descended into a bit of mess.

At some point I think Southgate decided that earning a point outweighed the risks involved of seeking all three, but when o do what he did v Scotland in the euros, of the point, but exactly what point that was - who knows.

Reacting to difficult situations, especially the longer a game goes on, appears to be Southgate's achilles heel

I also thought bringing Saka on was a strange tactical move.

Saka thrives when a team plays a high line and he can exploit the space behind. He is less effective playing against packed defences that sit deep.

If you are going to bring him on then the obvious change was Sterling who looked like he was lacking in confidence and sharpness, no surprise considering his lack of game time at City.

Fair point regarding Hungary. Changing things up tactically during the match must be more difficult at international level as there is so little time to train.
