    As I get older

Posted by Crème Brûlée on 9/10/2021, 0:39:04

I get very vivid flashbacks from childhood. I remember the summers spent wandering around Marsh Farm, the pink and grey paving slabs. The smell of chips and vinegar from the Purley Centre, paid for with the subs for cubs which me and a pal would bunk off every now and then. I remember Lea Manor rec, the smell of chlorine. The indoor hall and the balcony, the squash courts. I remember Steve the manager, a really cool bloke who didn't even get angry when me and my pal decided to play football in the deserted social bar one day. It's funny what comes back to you as random memories. The swimming pool at Lewsey with the slide and the deep end in the middle. Good times

Crawling through the pipes (under the railway line) that ran from Toddington Rd to Sundon Park, just because it saved 10 minutes walking!

        WTF were we thinking!

            Ha!
My sister and I used to do that in the 50s with our Brownie subs at the chip shop on Hockwell Ring.
We and our friends used to roam all over too, Sundon Park, the Marsh, the two fields in Mayne Avenue.

As a young lad I played in the various foundations for the Marsh Farm estate, still remember it being wheat fields

I lived in Sundon Park as a young lad in the mid-60s and would walk down to those fields as well

WW2 air raid shelters that still existed were the one of the most exciting adventures, Powdrills ( not sure about the spelling) and Vauxhall were the best.

I remember playing on a literal building site climbing up scaffolding in our village as new homes were being built. No fences, no security, no nothing. Just us kids would have a great time climbing half built walls and playing hide and seek in the half built shells of new properties.

Crazy to think about that now.

With a mate collecting conkers along the East Hyde road then climbing the embankment on the other side and putting pennies on the rail track, and recovering them after a train passed over them. Madness but as kids we never saw the danger.

Walking with my grandad and his dog through the fields that are now the M1.
