    Luton Blue Plaques

A new Heritage Blue Plaque scheme is beng launched in Luton. The Brickies gets theirs on Saturday for services to elbow patches and their connection to LTFC. Should be the start of a few around the town at long last.

Millwal do a walking tour similar to mine which includes a paving stone on the site the club was founded in 1885 - we need one too.

I trust that there will be one on the house in Oak Road through the garden of which hundreds of thousands of fans have walked to get into the away end - it is probably the house in Luton that has been mentioned on t'internet and social media more times than any other

I hope they keep the entrance after we move to PC. I might buy the stair case and plonk it in the front garden - imagine the admiring glances from my neighbours.

I have said before that I would like to see a "muriel" of a row of terraced houses around the entrance to the visitors' section at Power Court.

Gosh there's loads. Off the top of my head -
              LTFC
J.C. Lomax - Site of St. John's College
Chubby Deacon - site of his house
Joe Payne - his house in KR...I'm in the modern era now so out of my comfort zone but plenty of others.

              Other
Bute Hospital - pre NHS hospital paid for by donations by the people fo Luton
Some of the fantastic old Hat factories - Guildford Street, Bute Street and High Town.

              You got any?

                Agree with most of that.

I can think of loads of memorable old buildings but then when trying to think of trying to place them with something significant from the town's history I struggle a bit.

Maybe if we can work out the location of the Alexandra Coffee Tavern on George St then that would be deserving of a plaque!

The Arndale should have dozens of them. One for each of the iconic buildings and businesses it destroyed.

When I moved to Luton in 1951 out of a bombed out London it was like a paradise. All my important years were here, my mates are still here. Five cinemas, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, 2 theatres, great town centre, great businesses and industry and virtually no unemployment. Shangri La.

To be fair, the likes of the Waller Street Baths, The Letchworth Bacon Co. (formerly the Post Office, I believe) and the Marquis of Granby were decent buildings, not to mention the Market Hall.

It would have been nice to keep one or two buildings but many were just working class buildings in a working class town. You can't keep everything and I haven't seen any records of opposition to the Arndale before it was built - lots after obviously.

It's nice seeing the old photos and some of them do look quite nice compared to the replacements.

But I agree with you, a lot of the buildings lost were condemned and beyond saving. And you have to remember Luton was up against a lot of 'new towns' in the 1960s - Stevenage, Hatfield, Hemel, MK, Letchworth etc all on the town's doorstop. There was a push for modernity to be seen to 'keep up' with the neighbours.

Yes good post. I saw a documentary about ex servicemen who came back from WW2 with a real hatred of all things Victorian/Edwardian. They wanted a new world. Smooth clean concrete was number one in their minds. Those men would have run the country from 45 to mid 80's when they retired.

It wasn't a shithole when first built, but would have been better had the Bute Street, Barbers Lane and Cheapside been left open.
And yes, it was the largest in Europe.

The Corn Exchange tower was rotten and was too expensive to replace. Once that had gone then the bottom bit was a bit pointless

The Carnegie Library was too small for the town, was damp and the rooms were too small for other uses. Nobody wanted it.

I agree. It's down to two things, money and the attitude of councillors - many of the latter only cared about the former. That is still true today unfortunately.
