    Anyone remember Derek Hales?

Posted by Camavinga on 5/6/2021, 23:17:23

They were talking about Hardmen on some French footy page.

Ive never heard of him to be honest. Checked up on him and see he had a short spell at Luton.

anybody got any memories of this player?

Quite prolific in the reserves and I can recall I think he scored against Cardiff in a 2-1 win. Canít recall if debut or not.
As itís said we sold him to Charlton where he scored lots and also had a short spell over the river at West Ham.

He popped into the Hatters Club for a post match pint one Saturday evening.

He hadnt been watching the match however. He was wearing muddy wellies and had apparently been out shooting.

I can't quite remember exactly but he may well have had a shotgun and a brace of pheasants over his shoulder.

I remember going to watch charlton v Luton at the valley on a Friday evening back in 1977. We got to the ground quite late and missed a lot of the first half due to traffic. I ended up going in the charlton end of the ground I think derek hales scored a hat trick that night. Also there was a good following from Luton and I remember them trying to storm the pitch and getting to the charlton. For me the 1970s was the best time for football.

Flanagan didn't score. Hales got a hat trick and Curtis scored the other from a penalty.

Scored lots of goals for Charlton, had a successful partnership up front with Mick Flanagan.
Don't remember him as a hard man.

It's referenced in Paul Walsh's autobiography... Seems like he benefitted by getting a chance in the first team as a result.

The team mate was Mick Flanagan who is mentioned above. A cup game against Maidstone - they were both sent off - I think that they got into an argument because Flanagan thought that Hales should have passed to him rather than trying to score himself.

Scored a hat trick against us at The Valley in a game where a lot of Luton fans were late arriving due to particularly bad Friday night traffic in London.

I was at the Charlton v Maidstone game where this happened. Most bizarre thing Iíve ever seen on a football pitch!

There was, of course, an incident which involved a Luton player being sent off for an offence against his own player - Ashley Grimes was sent off after the ref saw him spit at Rob Johnson in a game at Norwich.

The following week Tony Luff, the goalkeeper for Hitchin (who I think were managed by Alan West at the time) was sent off for punching one of his team mates and he claimed that the only reason that he was sent off was that the referee had read about the Grimes incident the previous Saturday.

Luff now works for Houghton Regis Council but, coincidentally, grew up in Bedford where he was friends with Rob Johnson when they were youngsters. Johnson later also played for Hitchin.

There is also the coincidence that both Norwich and Hitchin are known as The Canaries.

I claim this week's prize for the most useless trivia in one post.
