Boris secures a 1bn trade deal with India. Creating 6000 UK jobs in the process.
First he smashes the vaccime programme, now he's smashing Brexit. Is there anything that bloke can't do?! What a lad.

that's a tad ingenuous, think the job figure applies to the whole area as the Tory inspired Free Port expands.

Any new deal like that is welcome, obviously.

But there's an awful lot of spin in that press release. It's an 'enhanced partnership' not a trade deal as such.

Do you mean the article that states current UK/India trade is worth 23 billion?

This isn't a new super deal. It's a 5% increase in trade. Which is good and positive. It's also very small compared to the loss in trade with the EU.

I have no issue at all with positives from Brexit being a source of happiness and celebration. But if you do that, you've got to own the bad bits as well.

I understand the EU are nearing a much better deal with India than this proposed one.

That's not what the BBC reported this Morning .

Attempts by the European Union, Australia and New Zealand to strike free trade deals with India have all stalled.

Sensible post - however have we lost trade with the EU ? I genuinely don't know if its temporary suspended , free flowing or you cant buy a German car for love nor money ?

however have we lost trade with the EU

Yes. Goods being exported to the EU have fallen quite sharply.

January figures were dismissed as being due to Covid, which is fair enough, but February EU trade was down 12% vs only 1% fall for non EU trade.

The trade deal promoted by our government was always going to result in such.

Sadly expect you are right .
However I suspect Covid is still having a big impact on those numbers - lots of Europe was effectively lockdown in February.

I just think it's always the consequence.

Our government promoted being able to control our own laws over market access. That usually means less trade which means less economic growth.

At the moment I think Covid is hiding a lot of it and is a reasonable excuse but there are a lot of mutterings about how fucking shit the deal actually is for a lot of industries - especially fishing and farming. It will be interesting to see how the government rides that out over the next few years.

You might be right - hopefully not and our trade can go back to as close as it was before. Whilst I think unlikely its possible we might get better deals elsewhere....forever the optimist.

If you're thinking China or Australia, the shipping costs would be much more.
