'Im not concerned with Palace. I'm only concerned with the page in the programme from the fitness trainer. I don't expect condescending comments like that from a fellow professional, if he is a fellow professional.' So announced Luton Town manager Mike Newell who, despite an excellent opening day, was goaded by a perceived slight of his Championship new boys. |
'I haven't read it, but I'm sure it wasn't meant in that way. I have the utmost respect for Mike Newell and Luton,' was the response of his Palace counterpart, Iain Dowie.
Newell was referring to the words of Palace's John Harbin: 'It'll be just like a cup final for them [Luton], so we'll have to make sure we're not the victim of any so-called giant killing.'
Unfortunately that was exactly what Dowie's team failed to do. But, as a welcome back to the level Luton last operated at nine years ago, this was a heartening beginning.
Luton have spent just £250,000 in the close season, compared to Palace's £2million-plus, and after their display here, Newell can be forgiven his bullishness: 'Why should these players not feel comfortable at this level?
Harbin's comments were a reference to Palace's erstwhile Premiership status and so it was that the travelling supporters offered predictable renditions of 'Premiership, you're having a laugh!' throughout the opening period.
