    Forum talk

Posted by Old Reader on 3/5/2021, 14:28:46

I'm a casual reader of Outlaws, but not a regular poster, and have been on the various incarnations of this style of registration-free message board all the way back to the first one which was prior to Lutonfc.com (which Outlaws eventually spun off from).

Over the decades there's always been some merit to the arguments for a registration style forum and it's clear that there is an audience for this, but NOT if it means sacrificing Outlaws.

We're all fans of the same football club but just like those in J Block not dreaming of watching a match in the Kenilworth end and vice-versa, it doesn't mean that there shouldn't be the option of both for fans and the same goes with forums.

I think most can agree that this new forum taking the Outlaws name and "branding" (for want of a better word) is totally going about things the wrong way and doesn't do them any favours (neither does going from 1998 message board software to 2003 forum software).

However I don't see why there needs to be competition between the two style of forums, as neither is there to grow a community to profit from and ultimately engagement about LTFC only benefits the club in the long run.

So I would recommend that the new forum be renamed to something which isn't a rip-off of Outlaws and then each forum should signpost to each other so fans know which forum suits them best between a more wild-west/old school approach with the original Outlaws or a more focussed registration forum.

Both styles of forums can co-exist quite easily and both will eventually have their own distinct communities, which will not be at the detriment of either forum.

The bloke that is ripping off outlaws with his new board is keeping his identity secret because he is a coward. He is probably on the sex offenders list.

I agree that the new forum should be renamed/rebranded as soon as possible, and continue so that it serves those who want/need it. However, in the absence of hearing anything back from admin over there, another poster has done some research and it appears that although the name could be changed, the URL cannot. So that part of the problem looks like it will always be there, and for that reason I'm out.

Simple answer close the board , ditch the URL and start again with you’re own name and “brand”

I agree that is the only way forward which could possibly work now (plus the apology I mentioned below), but it is not mine to do.

The new forum is certainly an imperfect vessel in almost every way.

Personally I'd say any group that wants to create that style of forum should look into open source software like discourse.org and then start out with some free hosting from places like infinityfree.net and then put their money where their mouth is and buy a proper domain name, which is a pretty tiny yearly cost (and the first year would barely be more than £2).

That way the alternative forum is using the best modern options and by starting from scratch and not being connected to the Outlaws imposter forum it won't (understandably) annoy all the OGs on here.

Yes, but a redirect wouldn't alter the fact that the word outlaws would appear in the URL once you are on there. I think it needed a completely clean rebranding which doesn't appear possible even if desired (and to be fair, the posters generally seem to desire it) - and a pretty full, grovelling apology from whoever set it up too, and that doesn't look like happening any time soon either.

Alternatively, there is already a proboards forum (ltfc fool) which a few on here also post on. It wasn't really necessary to start another, and even more unnecessary to copy the name etc.

I agree, and in the days leading up to all this I had said much the same thing - registration is already available elsewhere if people want it, this site needs to remain as it is. On the other hand, if the other sites with registration didn't meet their requirements for some reason, then they are of course allowed to set up their own board (indeed, that is often the retort when this board gets criticised). But to go about it in the manner which they have is clearly wrong.
