Is only an issue if we keep chipping it forward and trying to live off scraps from the defencive clearances. Play players who can control and pass on the floor and you take away 50% of the issue. We have become hoofball as we are not confident in passing to our own midfielders.

Agree. Jones tried to counter Cardiff by going big...didn't work. Long balls on Saturday against Stoke's two man mountain central defenders....forget it. Collins had no chance. Were never going to out muscle those types of teams whoever we put out.
But we might have a chance with pace, energy and skill, especially up front
This week id like to see Morrell get a start, alongside KDH, Berry, Moncur, Clarke. Lets play some footballers, and hopefully see some football.

I don't think it "didn't work" against Cardiff. I think it did to an extent. We managed to weather the aerial bombardment to the extent that we managed to drag them into a football match, which we were demonstrably better at.

I think we genuinely were disrupted by the loss of two Centre-Halves and after half-time switched off sufficiently that a quick, long, ball caught us out. Then we were chasing and did it again.

Against Stoke we were just shit all round.

        Cheers, Jim

          Yep, decent argument.

My gut feeling though is generally we dont do so well against the bigger more physical teams. That could be bollocks of course.

Indeed, no we don't. I was actually pleasantly surprised that we'd managed to drag them up to our level.

Still managed to find a way to bollocks it up but decent mitigation in the enforced changes.

            Cheers, Jim

On Saturday we play Sheffield Wednesday. They have one of the best midfielders in this league.
        Barry Bannan 5'5''.
It's all about quality not height.

I think it is a balance between quality and physicality - maybe Bannan plays alongside more physical players in their midfield, so they can protect him, help at set pieces, etc. I don't think you would want a midfield full of short players, but equally you wouldn't want a midfield full of bigger players who can't control or pass a ball. It has to be a balance, so it also depends upon who else is in our midfield.

We have been playing with Rea and Pelly. Both big but neither can control or pass a ball regularly.
I'd play Rea with KDH and Morrell tomorrow.
It's probably the best balance we can get.

Yep he's a good player. Must be on good wages and/or has a long time left on his contract as I would have thought a Stoke or a Middlesbrough would have been in for him last summer or last month what with Sheffield Wednesday's problems

                  He is quality.
You won't see him give the ball away cheaply, and he inspires those around him.

It's horses for courses. I think a diagonal ball over the top against sides that are defending high can quickly turn the opposition around which we don't do often enough. I'd rather be fighting for 2nd balls in the opposition's defensive third than anywhere else on the pitch. If the opposition are defending deep then, yeah agree, going direct isn't effective

Slow tempo, possession-without-purpose stuff is as crap as hoofball. Not saying we do that a lot but there have been a handful of times during second halves of home games where we have been too negative and done that

It's also an issue at set pieces, depending upon the size of the team we are up against.

That's bound to be an issue, we're hardly Land of the Giants FC.

Naturally, some of the experts won't have thought of that.
