    Good News/ Bad News

Great to see some positive stuff on progress with PC and Newlands, but as Mike Moran stated somewhat disappointed with the approval of Aldi at Gypsy Lane.

This has apparently left a funding gap in the developments ...

So in simple terms were Aldi earmarked for “ the small supermarket at Power Court” as originally planned?

If so they obviously think the Gypsy Lane site is preferable?

Either way , it’s a rather strange decision by the council to approve .

Wonder if the club have aproached Lidl?....

Not much offering that side of town, especially with all the new houses and flats on the old Vauxhall site.

It was decided in the High Court so even if LBC had opposed it doesn't that suggest it would have been overturned on appeal?

Nothing to do with Aldi at PC probably... just harder to sell in a supermarket there to any chain with the knowledge that there will be a new one at Gypsy Lane before PC opens..

Am I allowed to call bullshit on this one a little bit?

There is no evidence to suggest a rival supermarket would have a significant impact on footfall from another store 1-2 miles away. What has been proposed at PC is not an MK Asda sized market hall.

In Wigmore you have Asda and Iceland co-existing. In the town centre already you have Tesco. The town centre is a substantial hub as it is; there will be adequate demand both from town centre commuters, but also local residents.

You can call bullshit any time but get your facts right?

The Aldi is 800 metres from Power Court. It closes off that route into town.

In the town centre you already have Tesco and Lidl (in the old M&S).

As you state below supermarkets are now more selective so will go for easier wins elsewhere.

To add to this, I'll believe that Aldi will actually build their South Luton store when they actually do so, because surely the pandemic has severely affected their finances and their future outlook. Can they really afford an expansion right now against such a retraction in market.

Aren't people spending more money on local supermarkets than ever?

Have you seen the queues outside Aldi etc. Peoele are always going to buy food, there's no retraction in the food sector.

Tesco reported a huge fall in profits from what I remembered at the peak of the pandemic. People seem to be buying supplies they need, but less luxuries and also a complete collapse in corporate catering.

But Aldi will have seen an increase in demand due to people switching from more expensive supermarkets as they look to save money. Plus they can sell non-essential goods at the moment, when smaller specialist stores are forced to be closed. I suspect they will have seen increased sales and revenue, just depends whether they have also incurred additional costs like needing to hire more staff.

Lidl recently (last couple of years) opened a new store in Luton Road, Dunstable, near the BP garage, about as far from Aldi in Church Street as PC is from Gypsy Lane. It could work.
