16 years and 13 each for the other two low life’s who must serve at least two thirds of their sentence. Absolutely beggars belief.

Trouble is there was so much juror intimidation that they probably opted for the lighter conviction to stop their lives being made hell. In fact one of the Jurors had to be dismissed as she was seen mouthing "good luck boys" to the defendants. But yes they are low life and should be in for murder and a full life tariff, but we are too soft in this country.

Sadly they were convicted of manslaughter. So, that takes down a life sentence (which is a joke in itself) to anything between a suspended sentence and life.
My opinion is that they hammered them and there will obviously be an appeal.

They took a life but this great Judicial system failed yet again

Judge is on the record as stating there was no intimidation of the Jury. Does make you wonder what planet these mostly old out of touch duffers are on.

A re-trial would also be too much hassle and of course too expensive...!

As ex police of 17 years, the sentence leaves a horrible taste. Also as a law graduate, once the jury brought in that verdict the judges hands were largely tied. He had to give Long (the driver) a 25% off for pleading guilty to manslaughter. He also had to take into account with the others, their age.
Now he could just say to hell with it and sentence them as we think they should be, but they will just win on appeal.
As for a retrial, you would need some new that would likely have swung the jury. Nothing to do with hassle and expense, sadly you can’t just keep having trials until you get the right result. Much as I would’ve liked to at times. If the jury had been hobbled that would be grounds probably but the judge has specifically said he did not think it was the case.

I suppose we don't give serious offenders long enough but stick more in for short pathetic crimes.
